Letterkenny University Hospital
Letterkenny University Hospital ( ga, Ospidéal na hOllscoile Leitir Ceanainn) is a general hospital at Letterkenny, County Donegal, in Ulster, Republic of Ireland. One of Ireland's busiest, the campus is divided by a main road heading on towards the North/West of Donegal on the N56 road (Ireland). A teaching hospital, it maintains links with NUI Galway, LYIT and the Royal College of Surgeons. LUH has been affected by the problems faced by Ireland's Health Service, extending back to the Fianna Fáil– Progressive Democrat governments of Bertie Ahern and Mary Harney to the present Fine Gael– Labour coalition. A common feature is the treatment of patients on trolleys due to chronic bed shortages. The emergency department of the hospital was closed for nine months when it was destroyed by flooding in July 2013 which caused €40 million worth of damage. The Health Service Executive (HSE) ( ga, Feidhmeannacht na Seirbhíse Sláinte) is the publicly funded healthcare system in Ireland, responsible for the provision of health and personal social services. It came into operation on 1 January 2005. The current Director-General is Stephen Mulvany on an interim basis, after Paul Reid stepped down in October 2022. James Reilly (Irish Politician)
James Reilly (born 16 August 1955) is an Irish former Fine Gael politician, businessman and medical doctor who served as a Senator from May 2016 to March 2020. He previously served as Acting Minister for Children and Youth Affairs from February to May 2016, Minister for Health from March 2011 to July 2014 and deputy leader of Fine Gael from 2010 to 2017. He was a Teachta Dála (TD) for the Dublin North constituency from 2007 to 2016. He subsequently announced his retirement from politics after he lost his bid for election for his old seat at the 2020 general election. St Conal's Hospital ( ga, Ospidéal Naomh Conaill) was a psychiatric hospital located in Letterkenny, County Donegal, Ireland. Opened in 1866 (as the Donegal District Lunatic Asylum), it had people work on its farm as recently as 1995. The building is still extant. History The hospital, which was designed by George Wilkinson in the neo-Georgian style using a corridor layout, was built by Matthew McClelland at a cost of £37,900 and opened as the Donegal District Lunatic Asylum in February 1866. At that time it accommodated 300 patients (150 male and 150 female). It has been described as "one of the finest buildings in the country". A large new building was erected at the rear of the site in 1912. The facility became the Donegal Mental Hospital in the 1920s and benefited from a new chapel, designed in the neo-Norman style, being erected in the 1930s.
