Box Butte County is a County (United States), county in the U.S. state of Nebraska. As of the 2020 United States Census, the population was 10,604. Its county seat is Alliance, Nebraska, Alliance. The county was formed in 1886; it took its name from a large box-shaped butte north of Alliance. In the Nebraska Vehicle registration plates of Nebraska, license plate system, Box Butte County is represented by the prefix 65 (it had the sixty-fifth largest number of vehicles registered in the county when the license plate system was established in 1922). The Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad was a railroad that operated in the Midwestern United States. Commonly referred to as the Burlington Route, the Burlington, or as the Q, it operated extensive trackage in the states of Colorado, Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, Nebraska, Wisconsin, Wyoming, and also in Texas through subsidiaries Colorado and Southern Railway, Fort Worth and Denver Railway, and Burlington-Rock Island Railroad.
