Leopold Rosenfeld
Leopold Rosenfeld (21 July 1849 – 19 July 1909) was a Danish composer and singing teacher. He was also a music critic at the newspapers ''Danneborg'', ''Musikbladet'' and ''Tidsskrift for Musik og Teater''. In 1889, he was titled professor. One of his pupils was the opera singer Helge Nissen. He was buried at the Jewish Western Cemetery in Copenhagen. Helge Nissen
Helge Nissen (5 September 1871 in Rydhave ved Holstebro – 5 October 1926 in Copenhagen) was a Danish operatic bass-baritone, conducting, conductor, voice teacher, and film actor who was associated with the Royal Danish Theatre from 1897 until his death in 1926. He notably created roles in the world premieres of two operas by composer Carl Nielsen: Abner in ''Saul og David'' (1902) and Henrik in ''Maskarade'' (1906). His voice is preserved on a total of 70 recordings made with the Pathé, HMV and Deutsche Grammophon record companies from 1908 to 1914. Life and career Born in Rydhave near Holstebro, Nissen's brother was the opera singer Niels Frederik Nissen. He studied singing in Copenhagen with composer Leopold Rosenfeld. He made his professional debut in 1897 at the Royal Danish Theatre (RDT) as Mephistopheles in Charles Gounod's ''Faust (opera), Faust''. Danish Jews
The history of the Jews in Denmark goes back to the 1600s. At present, the Jewish community of Denmark constitutes a small minority of about 6,000 persons within Danish society. The community's population peaked prior to the Holocaust at which time the Danish resistance movement (with the assistance of many ordinary Danish citizens) took part in a collective effort to evacuate about 8,000 Jews and their families from Denmark by sea to nearby neutral Sweden, an act which ensured the safety of almost all the Danish Jews. Origins Medieval Danish art contains depictions of Jews—visibly wearing pointed hats—but there is no evidence that any Jews actually lived in Denmark during that time. With the conclusion of the Danish Reformation in 1536, Jews along with Catholics were prohibited entry into Denmark. The first known settlement on Danish territory was based on a royal dispensation.
