Biography In 1846, Hoesch's father expanded the family business, founding a rolling mill in Eschweiler and acquiring ten additional mine fields. On October 1, 1846, the company "Gebrüder Eberhard and Wilhelm Hoesch" (named after Leopold's father and uncle) went on to operate under the name "Eberhard Hoesch & Söhne." After the death of his uncle Eberhard on 21 April 1852, Leopold became the new head of the company. Westphalia (; german: Westfalen ; nds, Westfalen ) is a region of northwestern Germany and one of the three historic parts of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. It has an area of and 7.9 million inhabitants.
