Leonid Tibilov
Leonid Kharitonovich Tibilov ( os, Тыбылты Харитъоны фырт Леонид, Tybylty Xarithony fyrt Leonid; russian: Леонид Харитонович Тибилов; ka, ლეონიდ თიბილოვი, Leonid Tibilovi; born 28 March 1951) is a South Ossetian politician who served as the President of South Ossetia from 2012 to 2017 after winning the 2012 South Ossetian presidential election. Career Leonid Tibilov headed the South Ossetian KGB as South Ossetia's Security Minister from 1992 to 1998. He was then a first deputy prime minister and co-chaired a Georgia (country), Georgian-Ossetian peacekeeping commission. Tibilov stood at the 2006 South Ossetian presidential election, 2006 presidential election losing to Eduard Kokoity, who won 98% of the vote. RIA Novosti (russian: РИА Новости), sometimes referred to as RIAN () or RIA (russian: РИА, label=none) is a Russian state-owned domestic news agency. 2017 South Ossetian Name Change Referendum
A referendum on changing the territory's name was held in South Ossetia on 9 April 2017, alongside South Ossetian presidential election, 2017, presidential elections. It was approved by 79.53%. The constitution will be amended to denominate the formal name of the country from "Republic of South Ossetia" to "Republic of South Ossetia–the State of Alania", referencing Alania, a state built by the Alans, Alan people. South Ossetia is a partially recognized and Russian-occupied separatist state internationally recognized as part of Georgia.
