Its population in 2008 was around 2,700. Situated in a small plain at the foot of Mt. Terminillo, one of the highest mountains of the Apennine range, in the winter Leonessa is known mostly as a low-key staging center for the ski slopes of the Terminillo, and in the summer as a weekend vacation town frequented for the most part by Romans with local roots. Historically, the town is known mostly as the birthplace of St. Giuseppe di Leonessa. Until 1927 it was part of the province of L'Aquila. The town suffered one of the worst German reprisals during World War II when the Wehrmacht and the SS killed 51 inhabitants in early April 1944. A monument dedicated to the dead was erected in 1959. Madonna Di Loreto, Leonessa
Madonna di Loreto (Our Lady of Loreto) is a Roman Catholic church and convent located on Via Francesco Crispi just outside of the core of the town of Leonessa, province of Rieti, region of Lazio, central Italy. History In 1520, the nobleman Cristoforo Gizzi donated to the Capitolo Lateranense some lands and property for them to build a church dedicated to Santa Maria di Loreto. In 1534, the heirs of Cristoforo donated the church to the Capuchin order, and under the local patronage of Matteo Silvestri, who had joined the order of friars, they opened a hospital for poor and indigent. For decades there was a debate about building a convent at the site. In 1571, the priors of the town had the monks donate the church to the commune. In 1612 the abbot of the convent at Amatrice, sent to this convent some relics of St Joseph of Leonessa, including his heart, a vial of his blood, clothes, and other sundry property of the saint. San Pietro is a Gothic-style, Roman Catholic church in the center of the town of Leonessa, province of Rieti, region of Lazio, central Italy. History The church was once part of an Augustinian convent. The present church was built atop an older church structure (Santa Maria delle Grazie) which became the crypt. The church is now property of the Fondo Edifici Culto (FEC). Documents cite construction starting by 1344 but other do not cite completion until the 15th century. Monte Terminillo is a massif in the Monti Reatini, part of the Abruzzi Apennine range in central Italy. It is located some 20 km from Rieti and 100 km from Rome and has a highest altitude of .
