Leon Pająk
Leon Pająk (October 5, 1909 in Krasna Dąbrowa, November 26, 1990 in Kielce) was an officer in the Polish Army who fought in the Battle of Westerplatte during the Invasion of Poland in 1939. He was awarded the Order of Virtuti Militari. Military service and the Battle of Westerplatte He began his military service in 1930 as a private in the 20th Infantry Regiment of the Krakow Land in Kraków. In 1931 he enrolled at the Infantry Cadet School in Ostrów Mazowiecka. He was commissioned as an officer on 15 August, 1934. Pająk received his first assignment in the 4th Legions Infantry Regiment in Kielce, where he took command of an infantry platoon. In March 1938, he became commander of a heavy machine gun company. On March 15, 1939, he was promoted to the rank of lieutenant and together with the formation of a guard platoon, was sent to the Military Transit Depot in Westerplatte. Mieczysław Mikołaj Słaby ( December 9, 1905 in Przemyśl, March 15, 1948 in Krakow)– was an officer and medic in the Polish Army during the Invasion of Poland, notably during the Battle of Westerplatte. He was posthumously awarded the Order of Virtuti Militari. Early life He was one of the children of Józef Słaby, a railway worker, and Agnieszka née Rebizant, along with his brother, Franciszek, who later became an NCO in the Polish Army. After graduating from elementary school, Mieczysław attended the Kazimierz Morawski Gymnasium. During his school years, he was associated with the Polish Scout Association. Stanisław Roch Różewicz (16 August 1924 – 9 November 2008) was a Polish film director and screenwriter. He directed 26 films between 1947 and 1989. His 1967 film ''Westerplatte'' was entered into the 5th Moscow International Film Festival where it won a Silver Prize. Society Of Fighters For Freedom And Democracy
The Society of Fighters for Freedom and Democracy ( pl, Związek Bojowników o Wolność i Demokrację, ZBoWiD) was an official Polish state-controlled veterans association in the People's Republic of Poland. Initially headed by Franciszek Jóźwiak, it was formed on September 2, 1949 out of 11 pre-existing veterans associations. In its early period, and especially during the Stalinist years, the organization was formed mostly of former veterans of the Soviet-sponsored Polish People's Army, communist partisans and former concentration camp inmates. However, with the advent of a partial political thaw in the 1960s it also started accepting the veterans of other Polish formations that had fought in World War II. Directly subordinate to the party, the society held an important place within the Polish governmental structure: it was the only authority certifying veterans' and combatants' rights and privileges in Poland. Henryk Sucharski
Henryk Sucharski (1898–1946) was a Polish military officer and a major in the Polish Army. At the outbreak of World War II, he was one of the commanders of the Westerplatte position in Gdańsk, which troops under his command defended for seven days against overwhelming odds. Sucharski survived the war. Early life and career Sucharski was born on November 12, 1898, in Gręboszów, a village near Tarnów, to a peasant family. He finished a local bi-yearly trade school and then a similar school in Otfinów. In early 1917 he graduated from the 2nd KuK Gymnasium in Tarnów and on February 13 he volunteered for service with the Austro-Hungarian Army. During his service in the March Battalion of the Bochnia-based 32nd Landwehr Regiment, he passed his matura exams and in February 1918 graduated from an officers school in Opatów. Murnau am Staffelsee is a market town in the district of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, in the Oberbayern region of Bavaria, Germany. The market originated in the 12th century around Murnau Castle.
