Lenin Square, Baku
Azadliq Square ( az, Azadlıq meydanı), in Baku is the biggest city-centre square in Azerbaijan. It lies next to Baku Boulevard. History The square, formerly named Lenin Square after Vladimir Lenin, was created in the 1960–70s, after construction of the Government House of Baku was finished in 1952. A monument to Lenin was erected in 1955. It was also formerly known as Stalin Square. Along with the square, Baku authorities constructed several buildings including the "Azerbaijan" and "Absheron" hotels encircling the square, which were later demolished and replaced with the Hilton Baku and the JW Marriott Absheron Baku Hotel. The Lenin monument sculpted by D. M. Garyaghdi was removed in the early 1990s. The square was renamed ''Azadliq Square'' (Freedom Square) in 1991 after the collapse of the Soviet Union. The 2003 Azerbaijani protests was a series of opposition demonstrations and a violent crackdown against protesters and the 2003 Azerbaijani presidential election results. Martyrs' Lane or Alley of Martyrs ( az, Şəhidlər Xiyabanı), formerly known as the Kirov Park, is a cemetery and memorial in Baku, Azerbaijan dedicated to those killed by the Soviet Army during Black January 1990 and in the First Nagorno-Karabakh War of 1988–1994. History In the closing days of World War I, fighting broke out in Baku as a result of the Russian Civil War, with four groups fighting for control of the area when the Russian Empire collapsed. Fighting each other were the Bolsheviks, Mensheviks, Armenians and Azeris. Many people were killed in the fighting including some from a small British force sent to prevent Baku falling into the hands of the Russians. Topkhana Forest (Nagorno-Karabakh)
The Topkhana Forest ( az, Topxana meşəsi) is a forest and a state reserve located near Shusha, Azerbaijan. Claims of its destruction in 1988 caused tensions over the political future of Nagorno-Karabakh and encouraged civil and inter-ethnic unrest that would eventually erupt into the first Nagorno-Karabakh War. History Topkhana is the name of a gently-sloping hillside opposite (and visible from) the town of Shusha, but separated from the town by deep gorge containing the Karkar (also known as the Dashalty) river. Its name derives from it being the location of cannons ("top" in Turkic languages) of Mohammad Khan Qajar during his siege of Shusha in 1795. 2020 Baku Victory Parade () was held on 10 December, in Azadliq Square, Baku, capital of Azerbaijan. It was held in honor of the Azerbaijani victory during the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh war, officially described as the Patriotic War in Azerbaijan.
