Leinster Schoolgirls' Senior Cup (field Hockey)
The Leinster Schoolgirls' Senior Cup is a women's field hockey cup competition organized by the Leinster Hockey Association. It features teams representing schools from Leinster. The competition was established in 1917. Alexandra College are the competitions most successful team, winning the cup for the thirteenth time in 2016. During the 2000s and 2010s, Alexandra College and St. Andrew's College have emerged as the competitions two strongest teams. When Ireland won the silver medal at the 2018 Women's Hockey World Cup, the squad included eight players who had featured in Leinster Schoolgirls' Senior Cup finals. Chloe Watkins played in four finals while Nicola Evans, Gillian Pinder, Hannah Matthews and Emily Beatty all played in three each. Deirdre Duke and Elena Tice both played in two each while Nicola Daly made one appearance. Between 2005 and 2012 at least one member of the squad played in every final. Field Hockey
Field hockey is a team sport structured in standard hockey format, in which each team plays with ten outfield players and a goalkeeper. Teams must drive a round hockey ball by hitting it with a hockey stick towards the rival team's shooting circle and then into the goal. The match is won by the team that scores the most goals. Matches are played on grass, watered turf, artificial turf, synthetic field, or indoor boarded surface. The stick is made of wood, carbon fibre, fibreglass, or a combination of carbon fibre and fibreglass in different quantities. The stick has two sides; one rounded and one flat; only the flat face of the stick is allowed to progress the ball. During play, goalkeepers are the only players allowed to touch the ball with any part of their body. A player's hand is considered part of the stick if holding the stick. In field hockey, a penalty corner, sometimes known as a short corner, is a penalty given against the defending team. It is predominantly awarded for a defensive infringement in the '' penalty circle'' or for a deliberate infringement within the defensive ''23-metre area''. They are eagerly sought by attacking players and provide an excellent opportunity to score. There are particular rules for that only apply at penalty corners and players develop specialist skills, such as the drag flick, for this particular phase in the game. Bray, County Wicklow
Bray ( ) is a coastal town in north County Wicklow, Ireland. It is situated about south of Dublin city centre on the east coast. It has a population of 32,600 making it the ninth largest urban area within Ireland (at the 2016 census). The King's Hospital
The Hospital and Free School of King Charles II, Oxmantown, also called The King's Hospital (KH; ) is a Church of Ireland co-educational independent day and boarding school situated in Palmerstown, Dublin, Ireland. Silver Goal
The golden goal or golden point is a rule used in association football, lacrosse, field hockey, and ice hockey to decide the winner of a match (typically a knock-out match) in which scores are equal at the end of normal time. It is a type of sudden death. Under this rule, the game ends when a goal or point is scored; the team that scores that goal or point during extra time is the winner. Introduced formally in 1993, though with some history before that, the rule ceased to apply to most FIFA-authorized football games in 2004. Mount Anville Secondary School is a Roman Catholic, voluntary all-girls post-primary school in Goatstown, a suburb of Dublin, in Ireland (state), Ireland. UCD Ladies' Hockey Club is a women's field hockey club based in Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown, Ireland. It is the women's field hockey club of University College Dublin. Loreto College, Foxrock is a voluntary fee-paying Catholic secondary school under the direction of the Sisters of Loreto in Foxrock, a suburb of Dublin, Ireland. It is situated on the N11 in Dublin. History The school was opened in 1941. The Bishop asked Mother Pauline Dunne, Superior General of Loreto, to open a junior and secondary school in Foxrock. Three Rock Rovers Hockey Club is a field hockey club based in Rathfarnham, South Dublin, Ireland. The club was founded in 1893. Penalty Shoot-out (field Hockey)
A penalty shootout is a method used in field hockey to decide which team progresses to the next stage of a tournament (or wins the tournament) following a tied game. Two methods have been used: the original penalty stroke competition is a best-of-five penalty strokes with sudden death if scores were level after five strokes. An alternate penalty shoot-out competition was introduced at major tournaments in 2011. Sometimes known as a penalty shuffle, the method is similar to penalty shots in ice hockey and consists of one-on-ones between an attacking player and a goalkeeper.
