Leichhardt is a suburb of Ipswich in the City of Ipswich, Queensland, Australia. In the , Leichhardt had a population of 3,912 people. Geography The suburb is bounded to the south-west by the Bremer River, to the south by the Old Toowoomba Road, and to the north-east by the Bremer River again. Ipswich Golf Course occupies in the south-west of the suburb adjacent to the river. History The Ipswich Golf Club opened in 1898 as a membership-based organisation. It went into receivership in 2013 and was purchased by Terry Morris (founder of Sirromet Wines) and Dean Merrell. St Mark's Anglican Church opened circa 1935. Its closure on 15 November 1998 by Assistant Bishop Ray Smith. The suburb name was assigned following a request by local residents to the City of Ipswich in 1953. The Bremer River is a river that is a tributary of the Brisbane River, located in the Scenic Rim Region, Scenic Rim and Brisbane regions of South East Queensland, Australia. The -long Bremer River drains several Scenic Rim valleys in south-east Queensland, including the Fassifern Valley, with its drainage basin, catchment area covering approximately . Raymond George Smith (born 7 March 1936) is a retired Australian Anglican bishop. He served as an assistant bishop in the Anglican Diocese of Sydney, as the first Bishop of South Western Sydney (then called the "Bishop of Liverpool") from 1 November 1993 to 31 December 2001. Smith was educated at the Australian College of Theology and ordained in 1959.
