Leicester Comedy Festival
The Leicester Comedy Festival is an annual comedy festival held in a number of venues across Leicester, England early in the year. History The festival started in 1994 with 40 events in 23 venues over 7 days throughout Leicestershire, attracting 5,000 people. The festival now attracts over 60,000 people from all over the world and is seen as one of the 'Top 5 comedy festivals in the world' (The Guardian) Since then many top stand-up comedians have performed in the festival including Jo Brand, Jack Dee, Dave Gorman, Rory Bremner, Simon Pegg, Alan Davies, Bill Bailey, The Mighty Boosh, Johnny Vegas, Rich Hall, Jimmy Carr, Dara Ó Briain, Russell Howard, Dave Spikey, Harry Hill, Greg Davies, Sarah Millican and Romesh Ranganathan. The main programme is also complemented by workshops and outdoor street events to encourage the development of comedy skills. Dave Spikey
Dave Spikey (born David Gordon Bramwell, 6 October 1951) is an English comedian, actor, writer and film producer. He is best known for his stand-up comedy, writing and starring in the British comedy programme ''Phoenix Nights'', presenting ''Bullseye'' and ''Chain Letters'', and serving as team captain for the first four series of ''8 Out of 10 Cats''. Biography Early career Born in Farnworth, Lancashire, Spikey spent his early career working as a biomedical scientist in the haematology laboratory at Bolton General Hospital. It was during this period in the 1980s that he scripted and performed in a number of amateur pantomimes with a group of like-minded health workers called the Bolton Health Performers. Comedy In The Dark
Comedy in the Dark is a comedy performance taking place in the dark. The show was developed and produced by the Leicester Comedy Festival, with the first performance taking place at Belmont Hotel, Leicester, England on October 13, 2009. Jason Byrne (comedian)
Jason Byrne (born 25 February 1972) is an Irish stand-up comedian. In August 2008, he made his twelfth Edinburgh Festival Fringe appearance. Byrne previously presented a mid-morning radio show on Phantom FM as well as a comedy chat show ''The Jason Byrne Show'' featuring P. J. Gallagher, and a comedy panel show called ''The Byrne Ultimatum'' on RTÉ Two. He created and starred in a radio show also called ''The Jason Byrne Show'' from 2010 to 2012 on BBC Radio 2. The second series was awarded a Gold Sony Radio Award for Best Comedy. In 2018, he published ''The Accidental Adventures of Onion O'Brien'', a series of books about a young boy growing up in Ireland who has constant bad luck. The book is based on Byrne's childhood. De Montfort Hall
De Montfort Hall is the largest music and performance venue in Leicester, England. It is situated adjacent to Victoria Park and is named after the "Father of Parliament", Simon de Montfort, Earl of Leicester. History The hall was built by the Corporation of Leicester in 1912 and 1913, and was opened to the public on 21 July 1913, at a cost of £21,000. The architect was Shirley Harrison (1876–1961), who also designed the Usher Hall in Edinburgh. He was the son of Stockdale Harrison, architect of Vaughan College. Its indoor auditorium seating capacity is approximately 2000, and the hall contains a pipe organ believed to be the only surviving example of a large concert organ by Leicester organ builders Stephen Taylor & Son Ltd. Romesh Ranganathan
Jonathan Romesh Ranganathan (born 27 March 1978), is an English actor and comedian. He is known for his deadpan and often self-deprecating comedy. Ranganathan has made numerous appearances on television comedy panel shows, and in 2016 he co-presented '' It's Not Rocket Science'' on ITV, alongside Rachel Riley and Ben Miller. He has also been a regular panellist on '' The Apprentice: You're Fired!'', '' Play to the Whistle'', and ''The Museum of Curiosity''.
