The Lee County School District is a public school district based in Lee County, Mississippi (USA). The district serves the towns of: Guntown, Plantersville, Shannon, and Verona, as well as almost all of Saltillo, the community of Mooreville, and the Lee County portion of Sherman. It also includes small portions of Tupelo. The headquarters of the district is in Tupelo. Guntown is a city in Lee County, Mississippi, located in the northern part of the Tupelo micropolitan area. The population was 2,410 at the 2020 Census. Etymology Guntown is named for Virginia Loyalist ''émigré'' James G. Gunn ( d. 1826) who found asylum among the Chickasaws in present-day Lee County. History Union cavalry officers described Guntown as "a station and small village on the Mobile & Ohio road." The U.S. post office was established on April 13, 1866, marking the official launch of the service in Guntown. This was followed by incorporation on February 16, 1867, and appointment of the first mayor that year. Shannon, Mississippi
Shannon is a town in Lee County, Mississippi. The population was 1,496 at the 2020 Census. Shannon is located on Mississippi Highway 145, west of U.S. Route 45. Chiwapa Creek flows south of the town. History The town is named for Samuel Shannon, who purchased land at that location from Chickasaw Chief Itawamba in the early 1800s, then built a cabin and a farm. More settlers arrived following the Treaty of Pontotoc, which ceding Chickasaw land in exchange for financial compensation. In the early 1800s, Constantine Shannon brought strawberry plants from Shannon to Plant City, Florida, enabling the creation of a multimillion-dollar industry in Plant City. Mooreville, sometimes misspelled as Mooresville, is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Lee County, Mississippi, United States. As of the 2010 census the population was 650. Mooreville is part of the Tupelo Micropolitan Statistical Area. It has a post office and a ZIP code (38857). History The community was named for the Moore family, its first settlers. In 1900, Mooreville had an academy, three churches, a masonic lodge, and a Woodmen of the World lodge. It also had a population of 54. Geography Mooreville is in eastern Lee County along Mississippi Highway 178, east of the center of Tupelo, the county seat, and west of Dorsey. Sherman, Mississippi
Sherman is a town which straddles Lee, Pontotoc, and Union counties in Mississippi. The population was 600 at the 2020 census. History In 1840 Reuben Jones and John Witt settled what is now the Sherman community fourteen miles northeast of Pontotoc, however the town owes its formation and growth to the building of the old Kansas City, Memphis and Birmingham Railroad. When the operation of trains was begun on the newly built railroad in 1886 a station was established and named Sherman by a resident who had formerly lived in Sherman, Texas. R.P. Kelly built the first home in the spring of 1886. Other citizens and businessmen of the town were John Witt, J.E. Wade, and John Johnson. Tupelo () is a city in and the county seat of Lee County, Mississippi, United States. With an estimated population of 38,300, Tupelo is the sixth-largest city in Mississippi and is considered a commercial, industrial, and cultural hub of North Mississippi. Tupelo was incorporated in 1866. The area had earlier been settled as "Gum Pond" along the Mobile and Ohio Railroad.
