Lebedyn ( uk, Лебеди́н, ) is a city in Sumy Oblast, Ukraine. Lebedyn is located in Sumy Raion. Before July 2020, Lebedyn served as the administrative center of Lebedyn Raion; it was administratively incorporated as a city of oblast significance and did not belong to the raion. Population: An air base is located nearby. The city also has a railway station. History Lebedyn was built in 1653 as a small wooden fortress ( ostrog) of the Tsardom of Russia. Lebedyn reportedly got its name from the nearby Lebedyn Lake. In 1708 the settlement was a site of executions of Cossacks in Lebedin, in which supporters of Ivan Mazepa were mass executed on the orders of Peter the Great. Since April 1780 it was the administrative centre of Lebedin uyezd in Kharkov Governorate of the Russian Empire The district had a territorial extent of 2723.1 versts, or around 1,805 miles, with Lebedyn its capitol. Battle Of Lebedyn
The battle of Lebedyn was a series of clashes that began on 26 February 2022 at the city of Lebedyn, Sumy Raion, Sumy Oblast, as a part of the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine. Timeline 26–27 February On the evening of 26 February, Ukrainian forces held the Russian Forces on the outskirts of the city. The Russians reportedly suffered significant losses. At 22:45, a battle began in Kamiane. Five soldiers were brought to the hospitals of Lebedyn on the morning of 27 February. Almost all of them were wounded in and around Batiutenko Street. According to the Regional Centre of Emergency Care and Disaster Medicine, no wounded civilians arrived. Lebedyn, Cherkasy Oblast
Lebedyn ( uk, Лебедин) is a village in Zvenyhorodka Raion of Cherkasy Oblast (province) of central Ukraine. It belongs to Shpola urban hromada, one of the hromadas of Ukraine. Population: 4323. Executions of Cossacks in Lebedin ( uk, Катівня в Лебедині), (russian: Казни казаков в Лебедине) in 1708–1709 was a large-scale execution of Ukrainian Cossacks suspected of having sided with Hetman Ivan Mazepa after his break with Tsar Peter I during the Great Northern War. Cossack officials summoned to the Council of Hlukhiv who did not report to it were arrested, tortured and executed for treason. The exact number of victims is not known, but the minutes of the historical accounts indicate at least 900. City of regional significance ( uk, місто обласного значення, ''misto oblasnoho znachennia'') in Ukraine was a type of second-level administrative division or municipality, the other type being raions (districts). In the first-level division of oblasts, they were referred to as ''cities of oblast significance''; in the first-level autonomous republic of Crimea, they were ''cities of republican significance''.
