The leader of the opposition is a position in the Parliament of Singapore. The leader of the opposition is the leader of the majority opposition party in the Parliament, and is appointed by the prime minister. The first ''de jure'' leader of the opposition is Pritam Singh, who is the current secretary general of the Workers' Party and the Member of Parliament of Aljunied GRC. History The leader of the opposition was formerly an unofficial ''de facto'' position in the Parliament of Singapore, as the constitution and standing orders of Parliament did not provide for such a position. The formal office was established in the aftermath of the 2020 general election, which saw the opposition Workers' Party winning ten seats in Parliament. Pritam Singh (Singaporean Politician)
Pritam Singh (born 2 August 1976) is a Singaporean politician, lawyer and author who has been serving as Leader of the Opposition since 2020 and Secretary-General of the Workers' Party since 2018. Singh has been the Member of Parliament (MP) representing the Eunos division of Aljunied GRC since 2011. Singh graduated from the National University of Singapore in 2000 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in history. In 1999, he won the Straits Steamship Prize for being the top undergraduate student in history and political science. He was later awarded the Chevening Scholarship for postgraduate studies at King's College London, where he completed a Master of Arts degree in war studies in 2004. Singh joined the Workers' Party and was elected to Parliament in the 2011 general election, and has retained his parliamentary seat in subsequent elections. Chia Thye Poh
Chia Thye Poh (born 1941) is a Singaporean former politician. A former member of the Barisan Sosialis, he was the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Jurong SMC between 1963 and 1966. A leftist populist, Chia is most notable for being detained between 1966 and 1989 under the Internal Security Act for allegedly conducting pro-communist activities against the government, with the intention of causing a communist revolution. As a result, he was imprisoned for 23 years without trial and subsequently placed under conditions of house arrest for another nine years—in which he was first confined to the island of Sentosa and then subject to restrictions on his place of abode, employment, travel, and exercise of political rights.
