Lawlers, Western Australia
Lawlers is a ghost town on the Old Agnew Road, northeast of Perth, Western Australia, in the Shire of Leonora in the Goldfields-Esperance region of Western Australia. Gold was discovered in the area by Anderson, Hall and Heffernan, a party of prospectors that left Cue in 1892. Patrick Lawler and his party arrived in 1893 and had little success until they left and returned in 1894. The townsite was surveyed and gazetted in 1896 and named after Patrick Lawler. A ten stamp battery was established about northwest of town in 1899 on a five-acre lease. A police station/ courthouse was built the same year; it was closed in 1927, reopened in 1938, then closed permanently in 1950. In 1996 it was used as an office by the gold mining company Plutonic Resources. At its peak, Lawlers was the state's third-largest town, with a population of 8,000. The Shire of Leonora is a local government area in the Goldfields-Esperance region of Western Australia, about north of the city of Kalgoorlie and about northeast of the state capital, Perth. The Shire covers an area of , and its seat of government is the town of Leonora. History Leonora was originally part of the North Coolgardie Road District when that entity was gazetted in 1898. The town of Leonora was gazetted as the Municipality of Leonora with its own mayor in 1900. The Shire of Leonora originated from the Mount Malcolm Road District, which was established on 31 May 1912, when the North Coolgardie Road District was abolished and broken up into three separate road districts: Mount Malcolm, Kookynie and Menzies. (The North Coolgardie Road District had absorbed three municipalities in March 1912, including the Municipality of Malcolm; however, the amalgamation had not been successful.)
