Lavoslav Schwarz
Lavoslav Schwarz ( hr, Lavoslav Švarc, ; born Leopold Schwarz ; 1837-1906) was Croatian merchant and a historically significant figure of the Jewish community in Zagreb. Biography Schwarz was born in Zagreb into a Jewish family. He was the son of a Jewish merchant named Solomon or Saul. Through all his life he was distinguished philanthropist. He supported and founded Jewish and non Jewish social institutions in Zagreb. On his initiative city of Zagreb and Jewish community of Zagreb have awarded scholarships to students in public universities. For the Jewish community in Zagreb the establishment of the first Jewish nursing home in Zagreb was significant event. The nursing home was opened in 1910 and it was named ''Dom Lavoslav Schwarz''. Croatian Jews
The history of the Jews in Croatia dates back to at least the 3rd century, although little is known of the community until the 10th and 15th centuries. According to the 1931 census, the community numbered 21,505 members, and it is estimated that on the eve of the Second World War the population was around 25,000 people. Most of the population was murdered during the Holocaust that took place on the territory of the Nazi puppet state called the Independent State of Croatia. After the war, half of the survivors chose to settle in Israel, while an estimated 2,500 members continued to live in Croatia. According to the 2011 census, there were 509 Jews living in Croatia, but that number is believed to exclude those born of mixed marriages or those married to non-Jews. Mirogoj Cemetery
The Mirogoj City Cemetery (, hr, Gradsko groblje Mirogoj), also known as Mirogoj Cemetery ( hr, Groblje Mirogoj), is a cemetery park that is considered to be among the more noteworthy landmarks in the city of Zagreb. The cemetery inters members of all religious groups: Catholic, Orthodox, Muslim, Jewish, Protestant, Latter Day Saints; irreligious graves can all be found. In the arcades are the last resting places of many famous Croats.
