Laurentides (region)
The Laurentides () is a region of Quebec. While it is often called the Laurentians in English, the region includes only part of the Laurentian mountains. It has a total land area of and its population was 589,400 inhabitants as of the 2016 Census. The area is the traditional territory of the Algonquin First Nation. French Canadians began settlement in the first half of the 19th century, establishing an agricultural presence throughout the valleys. During the 20th century, the area also became a popular tourist destination, based on a cottage and lake culture in the summer, and a downhill and cross-country ski culture in the winter. Ski resorts include Saint-Sauveur and Mont Tremblant. The Laurentides offer a weekend escape for Montrealers and tourists from New England to Ontario, and with the building of a major highway through the area in the 1970s ( Autoroute 15), the area has experienced much growth. Laurentian Mountains
The Laurentian Mountains (French: ''Laurentides'') are a mountain range in southern Quebec, Canada, north of the St. Lawrence River and Ottawa River, rising to a highest point of at Mont Raoul Blanchard, northeast of Quebec City in the Laurentides Wildlife Reserve. The Gatineau, L'Assomption, Lièvre, Montmorency, Nord and St. Maurice rivers rise in lakes in this mountain range. Background Although Laurentides is one of Quebec's official regions, the mountain range of the same name runs through six other regions: Capitale-Nationale, Outaouais, Lanaudière, Mauricie, Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean and Côte-Nord. Saint-Eustache, Quebec
Saint-Eustache () is an off-island suburb of Montreal, in western Quebec, Canada, west of Montreal on the north shore of the Rivière des Mille Îles. It is located northwest of Montreal. History The city was founded in 1770 and was incorporated in 1835. It has a famous church, Saint-Eustache church, which was built between 1780 and 1783. A significant battle of the Lower Canada Rebellion was fought here on December 14, 1837. In the Battle of Saint-Eustache, the rebels were defeated, and the town was burnt. The church was fully rebuilt after the burning except for the front facade, where canon bullet holes can still be found. In 1979, General Motors opened a transit bus manufacturing facility in Saint-Eustache. The factory has produced vehicles under the brands of GM, MCI and, since 1993, has been owned by Nova Bus. Lachute
Lachute () is a town in southwest Quebec, Canada, northwest of Montreal, on the Rivière du Nord, a tributary of the Ottawa River, and west of Mirabel International Airport. It is located on Autoroute 50, at the junctions of Quebec Provincial Highways Route 148, Route 158, and Secondary Highways 327 and 329. Lachute is the seat of Argenteuil Regional County Municipality, and is served by the Lachute Airport. Its major industries include paper mills and lumber. The population is about 14,000 people. Mont-Laurier () is a town and incorporated municipality in northwest Quebec, Canada, located on the banks of the Lièvre River (''Rivière du Lièvre''), a tributary of the Ottawa River. Known as the "Capital of the Haute-Laurentides", the motto of the town is ''Laurus elationis praemium'', which translates to "Lift the laurels of reward". The demonym for its inhabitants is ''Lauriermontois''. According to the 2021 Canadian census, the population of Mont-Laurier is 14,180. Quebec Autoroute 15
Autoroute 15 (also called the Décarie Expressway (English) or Autoroute Décarie (French) between the Turcot and Décarie Interchanges in Montreal and the Laurentian Autoroute (English) or Autoroute des Laurentides (French) north of Autoroute 40) is a highway in western Quebec, Canada. It was, until the extension of Autoroute 25 was opened in 2011, the only constructed north-south autoroute to go out of Montreal on both sides. A-15 begins at the end of Interstate 87 at the United States border at Saint-Bernard-de-Lacolle and extends via Montreal to Sainte-Agathe-des-Monts with an eventual continuation beyond Mont-Tremblant. The total length of A-15 is currently , including a short concurrency () with Autoroute 40 (Boulevard/Autoroute Métropolitan) that connects the two main sections. Mont Tremblant Resort
Mont Tremblant Ski Resort (commonly referred to as Tremblant) is a year-round resort in the Laurentian Mountains of Quebec, Canada, located about northwest of Montreal. It is best known as a ski destination, but also features Lake Tremblant suitable for swimming and two golf courses in the summer months. The name of the mountain, Mont Tremblant, was derived from the Algonquin indigenous people, who called it the "trembling mountain." The summit is at an elevation of , which makes it one of the tallest peaks in the Laurentians. Saint-Sauveur, Quebec
Saint-Sauveur () is a town and municipality within the Les Pays-d'en-Haut Regional County Municipality, Quebec, Canada. It is in the administrative region of Laurentides in the Laurentian mountains, located about 60 kilometres north of Montreal. St-Sauveur is well known for its local ski areas, the biggest of which is Mont Saint-Sauveur. The ski areas market themselves jointly under the name of "Valley of Saint-Sauveur". Its proximity to Montreal, as well as its snow-making capability, night-time skiing, and après-ski establishments make St-Sauveur a popular destination for skiers. Skiing
Skiing is the use of skis to glide on snow. Variations of purpose include basic transport, a recreational activity, or a competitive winter sport. French Canadian
French Canadians (referred to as Canadiens mainly before the twentieth century; french: Canadiens français, ; feminine form: , ), or Franco-Canadians (french: Franco-Canadiens), refers to either an ethnic group who trace their ancestry to French colonists who settled in Canada beginning in the 17th century or to French-speaking or Francophone Canadians of any ethnic origin.
