Laura Moylan
Laura Moylan (born 1983) is an Australian chess Woman International Master (WIM). Moylan represented Australia in the World Youth Chess Championship (Girls) each year from 1994 to 1999. In 1995, aged 12, Moylan finished third in the Australian Under-18 Junior Girls Chess Championship. The following year she won the 1996 Australian Junior Girls Chess Championship. In 1999, she came second in the Australian Under-18 Junior Chess Championship (Open), held in Hervey Bay, behind David Smerdon. Moylan gained the Woman International Master title after winning the 1999 Oceania Women's Zonal Chess Championship held on the Gold Coast, Queensland. She finished 3rd in the 2002 Oceania Women's Zonal Chess Championship. Moylan has represented Australia at four Chess Olympiads in 2000, 2002, 2006, and 2008. 38th Chess Olympiad
The 38th Chess Olympiad (german: Die 38. Schacholympiade), organized by FIDE and comprising an open and a women's tournament, as well as several other events designed to promote the game of chess, took place from 12 to 25 November 2008 in Dresden, Germany. There were 146 teams in the open event and 111 in the women's event. In total, 1277 players were registered. Both tournament sections were officiated by international arbiter Ignatius Leong (Singapore). In a change from recent Olympiads, the number of rounds of the Swiss system were reduced from 13 to 11 with accelerated pairings. For the first time, the women's division, like the open division, was played over four boards per round, with each team allowed one alternate for a total of five players. The 34th Chess Olympiad ( tr, 34. Satranç Olimpiyatı), organized by the Fédération Internationale des Échecs and comprising an openAlthough commonly referred to as the ''men's division'', this section is open to all players. and women's tournament, took place between October 28 and November 12, 2000, in Istanbul, Turkey. The Chess Olympiad is a biennial chess tournament in which teams representing nations of the world compete. FIDE organises the tournament and selects the host nation. Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, FIDE held an Online Chess Olympiad in 2020 and 2021, with a rapid time control that affected players' online ratings. The use of the name "Chess Olympiad" for FIDE's team championship is of historical origin and implies no connection with the Olympic Games. Birth of the Olympiad The first Olympiad was unofficial. David Smerdon
David Craig Smerdon (born 17 September 1984) is an Australian chess player and economist who holds the FIDE title of Grandmaster (GM). He is the seventh highest ranked chess player of Australia. Smerdon has played for the Australian team in the Chess Olympiad since 2004. He currently is working as a coach at Anglican Church Grammar School, his former school. Chess career Smerdon was awarded the title of Grandmaster (GM) by FIDE in 2009. He achieved the norms required for the title at the Australian championship in 2005, the 7th Bangkok Chess Club Open, which he won in 2007 with a score of 7½/9 points, and the Czech Open in Pardubice, Czech Republic in 2007. He fulfilled the last requirement for the title when his rating passed 2500 in the FIDE rating list of July 2009.
