Laura Jane Suisted
Laura Jane Suisted (born Laura Eyre; 1 January 1840 – 7 September 1903) was a notable New Zealand writer, journalist and parliamentary reporter. She is regarded as a pioneer women journalist in New Zealand. Biography Suisted was born in Greasbrough, Yorkshire, England, on 1 January 1840. She was the only child of plumber Abel Eyre and his wife, Mary Lee. In 1862, Suisted moved to Dunedin, where she met and married station manager James Samuel Suisted. After several failed business ventures in different parts of the country, the couple moved to Westport. There, James was more successful as business man and they settled permanently, staying in the town for the rest of their lives. Career Suisted built her career as a writer, while her husband became a businessperson and served as mayor of Westport on two occasions. Greasbrough
Greasbrough is a small suburb in Rotherham, in South Yorkshire, England. The suburb falls in the Greasbrough Ward of Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council. Greasbrough had its own local council, Greasbrough UDC (Urban District Council), until its absorption into the County Borough of Rotherham in 1936. Greasbrough has 2,038 inhabitants and of land belonging to Earl FitzWilliam. It is located two miles (3 km) north of Rotherham. Greasbrough has a gothic-style church called St. Mary's, which was completed in 1828. A schoolroom is built into the rear lower part of the building. Otto Nordenskjöld
Nils Otto Gustaf Nordenskjöld (6 December 1869 – 2 June 1928) was a Finnish and Swedish geologist, geographer, and polar explorer. Early life Nordenskjöld was born in Hässleby in Småland in eastern Sweden, in a Finland Swedish family that included his maternal uncle, the polar explorer Adolf Erik Nordenskiöld, and cousin Gustaf Nordenskiöld. His father and mother were cousins, but his father's family name was "Nordenskjöld", while his mother's family name was spelled "Nordenskiöld". He studied at Uppsala University, obtaining a doctorate in geology in 1894, and later became a lecturer and then associate professor in the university's geology department. Career Otto Nordenskjöld led mineralogical expeditions to Patagonia in the 1890s, and to Alaska and the Klondike area in 1898. Otago Witness
The ''Otago Witness'' was a prominent illustrated weekly newspaper in the early years of the European settlement of New Zealand, produced in Dunedin, the provincial capital of Otago. Published weekly it existed from 1851 to 1932. The introduction of the Otago Daily Times followed by other daily newspapers in its circulation area lead it to focus on serving a rural readership in the lower South Island where poor road access prevented newspapers being delivered daily. It also provided an outlet for local fiction writers. It is notable as the first newspaper to use illustrations and photographs and was the first New Zealand newspaper to provide a correspondence column for children, which was known as "Dot's Little Folk".
