Ungmennafélag Laugdæla, commonly known as Laugdælir, is a sports club located at Laugarvatn in the southern part of Iceland. It was founded on 5 March 1908. Basketball Men´s basketball Recent history In March 1983, Laugdælir finished first in its group in 2. deild karla and played KFÍ, Breiðablik and Íþróttafélag Menntaskólans á Egilsstöðum (ÍME) in they playoffs for the 2. deild championship and promotion to 1. deild karla. According to the rules at the time, each team would play the other three once and the team with the best win-loss record would be crowned champions. Laugdælir won two out of three games and finished tied with KFÍ and Breiðablik. As the rules did not count for any tie-breakers, the three teams were slated to meet again to decide the winner. During the second try, KFÍ lost to Breiðablik in the first game, 78-77, but won Laugdælir in the second game 79-76. The Vestri men's basketball team, commonly known as Vestri, is a basketball team based in Ísafjörður, Iceland. The club was founded in 1965 as Körfuknattleiksfélag Ísafjarðar and held that name until it merged with newly founded Íþróttafélagið Vestri multi-sport club in 2016 and became its basketball department. Alexander Ermolinskij
Alexander Pavlovich Ermolinskij (russian: Александр Павлович Ермолинский; born November 11, 1959) is an Ukraninan-Icelandic basketball coach and a former basketball player. He was an assistant coach for Nadezhda Orenburg from 2010 to 2021. He played for both the Soviet Union national basketball team and Icelandic national basketball team. Early life Ermolinskij was born in Vologda in the Soviet Union. Playing career After playing for Honvéd for two seasons, where he won the Hungarian Cup in 1991, Ermolinskij joined Skallagrímur of the Icelandic Úrvalsdeild karla in 1992. Ermolinskij joined Grindavík in 1999 and helped the club win the Icelandic Basketball Cup in 2000. Pétur Már Sigurðsson
Pétur Már Sigurðsson (born 15 April 1978) is an Icelandic professional basketball coach and a former player. He is currently the head coach of Vestri. He is the former head coach of the Úrvalsdeild kvenna club Stjarnan and former assistant coach of the Icelandic men's national basketball team. He coached the men's national team during the 2013 Games of the Small States of Europe in the absence of Peter Öqvist. The team finished third with two wins and two losses. Career Pétur helped Skallagrímur reach the 2006 Úrvalsdeild finals, scoring 21 points in the fourth and deciding game against defending champions Keflavík in the semi-finals. Baldur Ingi Jónasson
Baldur Ingi Jónasson (born 15 July 1972) is an Icelandic basketball coach and player. He formerly coached Úrvalsdeild clubs Stjarnan and KFÍ. As a player, he spent 9 seasons in the Icelandic top-tier Úrvalsdeild karla with KFÍ and Þór Akureyri, scoring 1,616 points in 192 games. Over his career, he has played over 30 season in the Icelandic basketball league system. Playing career After starting his career with Bolungarvík and splitting two seasons with ÍKÍ and Laugdælir, Baldur transferred to KFÍ in 1994. In 1996, he helped KFÍ achieve promotion to the Úrvalsdeild karla for the first time in the club's history, scoring 20 points in the third and deciding game of the 1. deild karla finals against Þór Þorlákshöfn. Gnúpverjar (basketball Club)
Körfuknattleiksdeild Gnúpverja, commonly known as Gnúpverjar, is a basketball club based in Reykjavík, Iceland. It is part of the Ungmennafélag Gnúpverja multi-sport club. History The club finished as the runner-up in Division II in 1991, losing to Keilufélag Reykjavíkur 69-61, and 1992. In 1992, it had originally lost to ÍFL in the playoff final, 97–49, but due to ÍFL using an illegal player against Bolungarvík during the group stage, the final had to be replayed. As Bolungarvík was awarded 2–0 victory in the group stage game against ÍFL, they finished top in their group and advanced to the final game. In the rematch, Gnúpverjar lost again, this time 68–54. Fannar Ólafsson
Fannar Ólafsson (born November 20, 1978) is an Icelandic basketball analyst on Stöð 2 Sport's '' Domino's Körfuboltakvöld'' (English: Domino's Basketball Night) and a former basketball player. He went five times to the Úrvalsdeild finals, as a member of Keflavík and KR, and won the national championships each time. He won the Icelandic Basketball Cup in 2004 and 2011. During the 2004–2005 season, Fannar played with Doukas B.C. and Ratiopharm Ulm. He has the second best all-time field goal percentage in Ratiopharm Ulm's history. Dagbjört Dögg Karlsdóttir is an Icelandic basketball player for Valur of the Úrvalsdeild kvenna and a member of the Icelandic national team. She won the Icelandic championship in 2019 and 2021 and the Icelandic Cup in 2019. In 2021, she was named the Úrvalsdeild Defensive Player of the Year and in 2022, she was named to the Úrvalsdeild Domestic All-First Team. Laugarvatn
Laugarvatn () is the name of a lake and a small town in the south of Iceland. The lake is smaller than the neighbouring Apavatn. Tourism Laugarvatn lies within the Golden Circle, a popular tourist route, and acts as a staging post. The town has a population of about 200, and lies predominantly along the west side of the lake. The lake contains geothermal springs under its surface, making it a popular swimming spot with some warm patches along the shoreline year-round. Education Menntaskólinn að Laugarvatni (ML), a boarding gymnasium with approximately 200 students, is located in the town.
