''Lasthenia kunthii'' (vernacular name ''ranca'')) is a herb endemic to central Chile. It was first gathered in Rancagua. This herb grows in inundated environments, such as lagoons and grasslands with large amounts of salt. Hugo Gunckel Lüer
Hugo Gunckel Lüer (August 10, 1901 – July 17, 1997) was a Chilean pharmacist, botanist, and university professor. Life Gunckel was born in Valdivia. His primary and secondary studies were at the Colegio Alemán (founded by Carlos Anwandter) and in the Liceo de Hombres high school, entering the Universidad de Concepción in 1921, from which he got a degree in pharmacy. As assistant of botany to the Prof. Alcibíades Santa Cruz, he demonstrated his interest in nature, stimulated by his parents who offered him frequent excursions that allowed him to observe nature, plants, and their development. Later, the study of plants, their properties, and life conditions became a passion. After graduating he worked as a professional in Talca in the pharmacy of Guillermo Kuschel, the distinguished trade union and industrial director, one of the founding partners of the Laboratorio Geka. Luisa Eugenia Navas
Luisa Eugenia Navas Bustamante (27 July 1920 – 18 November 2020) was a Chilean pharmacist and botanist. Life On 9 May 1951 she received a degree in chemistry and pharmacy. That same year she became Assistant Chair of Botany in the School of Chemistry and Pharmacy of the University of Chile. In 1958 she was “Professor extraordinarius”, and assistant of Hugo Gunckel in the Instituto Pedagógico in the section of the cryptogamic plants and finally chair Professor in the Faculty Chemical and Pharmaceutical Sciences the 1985. She studied seaweed, she concurred with his father to the Marine Biology Station at Montemar. With authorization of the Dean of Pharmacy, she went twice a week National Museum of Natural History of Santiago. On behalf of Humberto Fuenzalida, she reorganized the Botanical section for Cryptogamy. ''Lasthenia'', commonly known as goldfields, is a genus of flowering plants family Asteraceae. The genus is named after Lasthenia of Mantinea, a cross-dressing female pupil of the ancient Greek philosopher Plato. Description The goldfield genus comprises annual (rarely perennial) herbs that are either glabrous or hairy. Stems are typically branched and erect, attaining a height of less than . Their opposite leaves, up to in length, have entire margins and pinnate venation. Inflorescences are characterized by solitary heads (sometimes in cymes), with phyllaries free or partly fused. The receptacle may present as naked and narrowly conic to hemispherical. The normally yellow ray florets may number 4 to 16, and the ligules are typically yellow as well.
