Last Call (1958 Film)
''Last Call'' is a 1958 Australian TV play set in a South American country. It was directed by Christopher Muir. Plot General Zaguerro is the President of a fictitious South African republic. He has to decide whether to lead his army against the enemy or stay at his headquarters and defend his niece's honour. Cast *John Morgan * Richard Pratt * Wynn Roberts *Judith Thompson Production It was broadcast in a series of "live" dramas that were shown every fortnight on Sunday night on ABV-2 Melbourne. In order, they were ''The Governess'', ''The Last Call'', ''The Rose without a Thorn'', ''The Lark'', ''Citizen of Westminster'', and ''Enemy of the People'' (the last of "the season"). Some outdoor scenes were shot at Moorabbin Airport. Judith Thompson later appeared in another South American set drama, ''You Can't Win 'Em All''. Christopher Muir
} Christopher Muir (1931 - 2022) was an Australian director and producer, notable for his work in TV in the 1950s and 1960s. In the 1980s he was head of ABC Television drama. Biography Most of his early childhood was spent in France, but he returned to Melbourne upon the outbreak of World War II. He joined the ABC in 1949 at the recommendation of his headmaster upon completing his schooling at Melbourne Grammar School. Initially working as a messenger boy, he soon became a general trainee, and by 1954 he was a radio announcer. In 1955 the ABC seconded him to Paris to study television. He returned to Melbourne for the inauguration of ABC television in 1956. The ensuing decade saw him become a pioneer of television drama and music productions, often screened live-to-air during prime time on the ABC. Richard J. Pratt (born Ryszard Przecicki; 10 December 193428 April 2009) was an Australian businessman, chairman of the privately owned company Visy Industries, and a leading figure of Melbourne society. In the year before his death Pratt was Australia's fourth-richest person, with a personal fortune valued at billion. Early life Ryszard Przecicki was born in the Free City of Danzig (present-day Gdańsk, Poland) to Jewish parents Leon and Paula on 10 December 1934. His family immigrated to Australia in 1938 seeking safe refuge from the Nazis and settled in Shepparton, Victoria, changing their surname from Przecicki to Pratt. Pratt had a rough journey travelling to Australia without getting caught by the Nazis. The family faced food shortages en route. Pratt was educated at Grahamvale Primary School, Shepparton High School and University High School and enrolled in a Bachelor of Commerce degree at the University of Melbourne in 1953. Wynn Roberts (actor)
Wynn Roberts (born 1923/1924 – 24 August 2021) credited also as Wyn Roberts and Wynne Roberts, was an Australian radio, stage and screen actor who appeared in more than 70 film and television productions between the early 1950s and 2001. He appeared in numerous TV plays and also featured in TV miniseries over a career spanning 50 years. His television credits include ''Homicide'', ''Prisoner'', '' Special Squad'', ''Neighbours'', ''The Flying Doctors'', ''Police Rescue'', ''A Country Practice'' and '' Wildside''. He is also known for his role as Sergeant Bumpher in the 1975 film classic '' Picnic at Hanging Rock''. He was also a leading stage actor, starting from the late 1940s. He worked for a number of years in radio. A 1965 article called him "one of the best and most versatile actors left in Australia - probably the best in Melbourne". ''You Can't Win 'Em All'' is a 1962 Australian television play directed by Patrick Barton. Filmed in London, it was based on a play by Alun Owen which had been previously filmed by the BBC in 1962. ''Filmink'' called it "a light-hearted comedy adventure closer to a 1940s Humphrey Bogart movie at Warner Bros, complete with colourful support characters, sexy dames and a backlot third world setting." Premise British wireless operator Corrigan Blake is stranded in Jamaica. In a bar, he receives an offer to help repair a radio for some revolutionaries in a South American company. Corrigan agrees on the proviso he is paid one thousand dollars. Corrigan visits the revolutionary compound, under the command of Feliz and Feliz's sister Anna Maria. Feliz is kidnapped by soldiers led by Manuel Selasco, who once loved Anna Maria. Corrigan decides to rescue him by pretending to be a traitor.
