Larry Watson (footballer)
Larry John Watson (born 23 September 1957) is a former Australian rules football player who played with and in the Victorian Football League (VFL) and West Adelaide in the South Australian National Football League (SANFL). Career VFL Originally from Dimboola in western Victoria, Watson made his senior VFL debut for Essendon late in the 1975 season. A utility, he finished third in Essendon's 1976 'best and fairest' count despite playing only 11 games that year. In 1977 Watson was joined at Essendon by his younger brother Tim. Dimboola, Victoria
Dimboola is a town in the Shire of Hindmarsh in the Wimmera region of western Victoria, Australia, 334 kilometres north-west of Melbourne. History Situated on the Wimmera River, Dimboola was previously known as 'Nine Creeks'. Following a survey conducted in late 1862 by contractor Frederick Smith of Ararat, a plan for a township in the County of Dimboola was proposed. It was first recognised as being a township when mentioned in the April 1863 edition of the ''Government Gazette''. Before the arrival of white people into the district, the Aborigines called the area Watchegatcheca which had the meaning 'Wattle Tree and White Cockatoos'. The name 'Dimboola' has generally been accepted to have come from the Sinhalese word "dimbula" meaning 'Land of Figs'. 1979 VFL Season
The 1979 VFL season was the 83rd season of the Victorian Football League (VFL), the highest level senior Australian rules football competition in Victoria. The season featured twelve clubs, ran from 31 March until 29 September, and comprised a 22-game home-and-away season followed by a finals series featuring the top five clubs. The premiership was won by the Carlton Football Club for the twelfth time, after it defeated by five points in the 1979 VFL Grand Final. The season saw the beginning of the league's expansion into the interstate and Sunday television markets, with two Sunday matches played in Sydney, New South Wales. Night series defeated 12.8 (80) to 7.10 (52) in the final. Sturt Football Club
The Sturt Football Club, nicknamed The Double Blues, is a semi-professional Australian rules football club based in the suburb of Unley, South Australia, which plays in the South Australian National Football League. Founded in 1901 by the Sturt Cricket Club, the club initially struggled to make the finals, however, in 1915 they won their first Premiership. After several decades of substantial finals appearances and a few premiership wins, Sturt entered a period of success, winning seven premierships from 1966 to 1976 under coach Jack Oatey. Mark Mickan
Mark James Mickan (born 30 January 1961) is a former professional Australian rules footballer who played for the Brisbane Bears and Adelaide Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). Mickan began his senior career with South Australian National Football League (SANFL) club in 1981 and finished back at West Adelaide in 1994. All-Australian team selection in 1988 marked the pinnacle of his playing career. He has a sister, Patricia Mickan, who was a basketballer. He coached SANFL club Woodville-West Torrens in 1998 and 1999, Glenelg for five and half years from 2006 to June 2011, and West Adelaide from 2014 to 2017. In 2015, Mickan led West Adelaide to the club's first premiership since 1983 when they defeated Woodville-West Torrens by 30 points in the 2015 SANFL Grand Final. Grantley Fielke
Grantley Craig Fielke (born 18 March 1962 in Loxton, South Australia) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for West Adelaide Football Club in the South Australian National Football League (SANFL), and the Collingwood Football Club and Adelaide Football Club in the Victorian/Australian Football League (VFL/AFL). League career Fielke was recruited by the West Adelaide Football Club from their South Australian country zone of the Riverland in 1977 at the age of 15. After taking time to adjust to life in Adelaide (he had never been to the city before), Fielke made his league debut for West Adelaide on 7 April 1979, and keeping his place in the league team for the rest of the season. Tony Burgess (footballer)
Anthony "Tony" Burgess (born 13 February 1961) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with Collingwood in the Victorian Football League (VFL) and West Adelaide in the South Australian National Football League (SANFL). Playing career Burgess, who started his SANFL career in 1980, was a full-back in West Adelaide's 1983 premiership team. Going into the Grand Final battling a hamstring injury, coach Neil Kerley assigned Burgess had the task of playing on Sturt's champion full-forward Rick Davies who was sitting on 149 goals for the season. In West Adelaide's two minor round games against Sturt in 1983, Kerley had tried Peter Winter on the man the called the "Jumbo Prince", and he had kicked 15 goals. Bruce Lindner
Bruce Norman Lindner (born 20 June 1961) is a former professional Australian rules footballer who played for the Geelong Football Club and Adelaide Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). He is the nephew of legendary footballer Don Lindner. SANFL career Blessed with high marking and strong hands, as well as having no trouble kicking the ball 50 metres on the fly even into the wind, Lindner made his league debut for West Adelaide on 16 June 1980 but failed to cement his place in the top side, playing only 4 games and kicking 2 goals for a season mainly spent in the reserves. He went on to win the 1981 SANFL Reserves Magarey Medal, despite only playing 10 reserves games for the year. Ian Borchard
Ian Alfred Borchard (born 5 August 1957) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with in the Victorian Football League (VFL) during the 1970s. He also played for West Adelaide in the South Australian National Football League (SANFL). Playing career VFL Borchard, originally from Swan Hill in Victoria, spent three seasons at Richmond. In the last of those years, 1978, Borchard was cleared to play for South Fremantle in the Western Australian Football League (WAFL) midway through the season, but only lasted one week before he returned to Richmond on 29 June. Michael Damian Smith (born 28 April 1959) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with South Melbourne in the Victorian Football League (VFL) and with in the South Australian National Football League (SANFL). Career South Melbourne Smith played his football as a centre half-forward. He kicked five goals on his South Melbourne debut, in round 10 of the 1977 VFL season, against Collingwood. During the 1981 season, Smith was cleared to Richmond but wouldn't play a senior VFL game at the club. He was embroiled in controversy in 1981 when it was discovered that he had mistakingly provided information on his permit to play for South Melbourne. The discrepancy was in his address. His grandmother's South Melbourne address was on the permit but in reality lived in Caulfied, which was in St Kilda's zone. Mark Dreher
Andrew Mark Dreher (born 27 March 1961) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with Collingwood in the Victorian Football League (VFL). A Willaura recruit, Dreher played for Collingwood from 1979 to 1982. Three of Dreher's his first four appearances with Collingwood came in the 1979 finals series. After debuting in round 20, Dreher played in a qualifying final, semi final and preliminary final. Bernie Conlen
Bernard Harold Conlen (born 26 October 1960) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with South Melbourne in the Victorian Football League (VFL), and in the South Australian National Football League (SANFL). Career South Melbourne Conlen, an Oakleigh District recruit, played for South Melbourne in the final two rounds of the 1981 VFL season. He debuted in South Melbourne's 111 point loss to Essendon at Windy Hill in round 21, having 18 disposals. The next week the club played their last ever game before relocation, against North Melbourne. Conlen had five disposals, in a 33 point loss. Craig Williams (Australian Footballer)
Craig Williams (born 14 August 1954) is a former Australian rules footballer who played a season with in the VFL. He also played for West Adelaide in the SANFL for the entire 1980s. Career VFL St Kilda recruited Williams from Victorian Football Association (VFA) club Prahran and he played eight games in the 1977 VFL season. He left St Kilda at the end of the year and crossed to but failed to make the seniors again, spending two years with Fitzroy's reserves. SANFL Williams moved to South Australia in 1980 where he joined West Adelaide and would be a regular fixture in their side for the rest of the decade. Under legendary coach Neil Kerley, Williams was a member of West's 1983 premiership side that defeated Sturt.
