Bernie Conlen
Bernard Harold Conlen (born 26 October 1960) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with South Melbourne in the Victorian Football League (VFL), and in the South Australian National Football League (SANFL). Career South Melbourne Conlen, an Oakleigh District recruit, played for South Melbourne in the final two rounds of the 1981 VFL season. He debuted in South Melbourne's 111 point loss to Essendon at Windy Hill in round 21, having 18 disposals. The next week the club played their last ever game before relocation, against North Melbourne. Conlen had five disposals, in a 33 point loss. He took part in the 1982 Escort Championships, which was won by the Swans, but didn't feature in the 1982 VFL season, only the reserves. Follower (Australian Rules Football)
In Australian rules football, the followers are the players in the three positions- ruckman, ruck rover, and rover. These three players are known as followers because they have traditionally been used as players that follow the ball all around the ground, as opposed to playing in a set position. In recent years, there has been a decreased emphasis on set positions in Australian football. Followers still cover more ground than any other player on the field. Ruckman The ruckman's job is to contest with the opposing ruckman at centre-bounces that take place at the start of each quarter or after each goal, and at stoppages (i.e., boundary throw ins, ball ups). The ruckman usually uses his height (typically players are over 195 cm tall) to palm/tap the ball down so that a ruck rover or rover can run onto it. 1982 VFL Season
The 1982 VFL season was the 86th season of the Victorian Football League (VFL), the highest level senior Australian rules football competition in Victoria. The season featured twelve clubs, ran from 20 March until 25 September, and comprised a 22-game home-and-away season followed by a finals series featuring the top five clubs. The season saw the VFL establish its first permanent interstate presence, as the South Melbourne Football Club (which was known after June just as the Swans, being renamed Sydney the following year) played all of its home games on Sunday afternoons in Sydney, New South Wales. Tony Antrobus
Anthony John Antrobus (born 8 April 1962) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for the North Adelaide Roosters in the South Australian National Football League (SANFL) and had stints with Essendon and St Kilda in the Victorian Football League (VFL). He was commonly referred to by his nickname of "The Ant". Although only weighing 72 kg and being 174 cm tall, Antrobus was a very aggressive player who never took a backward step. Tony Antrobus was the winner of the 1983 Magarey Medal while playing for North Adelaide. Stephen Kernahan
Stephen Scott Kernahan (born 1 September 1963) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for the Carlton Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL) and for the Glenelg Football Club in the South Australian National Football League (SANFL). He also played 16 State of Origin games for South Australia and gained selection as an All-Australian five times (1983, 1986, 1988, 1992 and 1994). He later served for six years as president of the Carlton Football Club. Magarey Medal
The Magarey Medal is an Australian rules football honour awarded annually since 1898 to the fairest and most brilliant player in the South Australian National Football League (SANFL), as judged by field umpires. The award was created by William Ashley Magarey, then chairman of the league. The current recipient is Aaron Young. History William Magarey was born in Adelaide, South Australia. A lawyer by vocation, he had an enduring interest in sports, although he did not play football. He was, however, an active sports administrator who, in 1897, became the inaugural Chairman of the South Australian Football Association (later renamed the SANFL). The 1982 Escort Championships (also known as the Escort Cup) was an Australian rules football knockout tournament held between March and July 1982. The tournament was organised by Australian Football Championships, and was contested by teams from the Victorian Football League, South Australian National Football League and West Australian Football League. The tournament was won by the Swans, who defeated in the Grand Final. Background The 1982 Escort Championships was the sixth season of the national night premiership competition. The Sydney Swans are a professional Australian rules football club based in Sydney, New South Wales.
