Larisa Kurkina
Larisa Nikolaevna Kurkina (russian: Лариса Николаевна Куркина) born December 18, 1973) is a Russian cross-country skier who has competed since 2002. She won a gold medal in the 4 × 5 km relay at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin. Kurkina won a silver medal in the 4 × 5 km relay at the 2005 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships and finished fifth in the 30 km at those same championships. Bryansk ( rus, Брянск, p=brʲansk) is a city and the administrative center of Bryansk Oblast, Russia, situated on the River Desna, southwest of Moscow. The Women's 15 kilometre pursuit cross-country skiing competition at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy was held on 12 February, at Pragelato. Yuliya Chepalova was the reigning World Champion in the event, while Canadian Beckie Scott won the 10 km pursuit at the 2002 Olympics. However, neither were in the medals here; Kristina Šmigun and Kateřina Neumannová were neck-and-neck coming into the stadium, but Šmigun was the quickest through the last straight and won by 1.9 seconds. Russia's Yevgeniya Medvedeva-Arbuzova took bronze. In 2014, the Estonian Olympic Committee was notified by the IOC that one of Šmigun's samples from the 2006 Turin Games had been retested with a positive result. La Clusaz (; frp, La Klyuza, ) is a commune in the Haute-Savoie department in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region in south-eastern France. Overview It is a ski resort in the Alps near the Swiss border. Olga Viktorovna Zavyalova (russian: О́льга Викторовна Завья́лова), née ''Korneyeva'' (born August 24, 1972 in Leningrad) is a Russian cross-country skier who competed from 1993 to 2010. She won six medals at the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships with two gold (30 km: 2003, 7.5 km + 7.5 km double pursuit: 2007), one silver (10 km: 2007), and three bronzes (5 km + 5 km double pursuit, 15 km, and 4 × 5 km relay: all in 2003). Zavyalova's best individual finish at the Winter Olympics was seventh in the 7.5 km + 7.5 km double pursuit in Turin in 2006. The 2008–09 FIS Cross-Country World Cup was a multi-race tournament over the season for cross-country skiers. It was the 28th official World Cup season in cross-country skiing for men and women. The season began on 22 November 2008 with 15 km freestyle races for women in Gällivare, won by Charlotte Kalla of Sweden. The World Cup is organised by the FIS who also run world cups and championships in ski jumping, snowboarding and alpine skiing amongst others. FIS Nordic World Ski Championships 2005
The FIS Nordic World Ski Championships 2005 took place 16–27 February 2005 in Oberstdorf, Germany, for the second time after hosting it previously in 1987. The ski jumping team normal hill event returned after not being held in 2003. The double pursuit distances of 10 km (5 km classical mass start + 5 km freestyle pursuit) women and 20 km (10 km classical mass start + 10 km freestyle pursuit) men were lengthened to 15 km for women (7.5 km classical mass start + 7.5 km freestyle pursuit) and 30 km for men (15 km classical mass start + 15 km freestyle pursuit). The Women's team sprint cross-country skiing competition at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy was held on 14 February, at Pragelato. This was the first time the team sprint was contested in the Winter Olympics. Each race featured teams of two, with each skier completing 3 laps of a 1145 metre course.
