Lanto Sheridan
Lanto Sheridan (born 15 December 1988), educated at Eton College and University of Oxford, is a British polo player with a handicap of 4. Sheridan started playing polo in The Pony Club at the age of 9, with which he won the Gannon section at the National Championships at Cowdray. He also won The Baileys Horse Feeds Saddle as the Pony Club Polo Player of the Year. After leaving school, he played all year round for 5 years, in countries such as Australia, New Zealand, Argentina, Thailand, Barbados and Dubai. In 2010 he played for the Young England Team. In 2012 he joined Harris Manchester College, Oxford and since then has been a member of the Oxford University Polo Club. He is the first polo professional to study at Oxford or Cambridge for an undergraduate degree. He is also the very first student who won an Extraordinary Full Blue in polo at Oxford University. Harris Manchester College is one of the constituent colleges of the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom. It was founded in Warrington in 1757 as a college for Unitarian students and moved to Oxford in 1893. Polo
Polo is a ball game played on horseback, a traditional field sport and one of the world's oldest known team sports. The game is played by two opposing teams with the objective of scoring using a long-handled wooden mallet to hit a small hard ball through the opposing team's goal. Each team has four mounted riders, and the game usually lasts one to two hours, divided into periods called ''chukkas'' or "''chukkers''". Polo Handicap
A polo handicap is a system created by Henry Lloyd Herbert, the first president of the United States Polo Association, at the founding of the USPA in 1890 so teams could be more evenly matched when using players with varying abilities. The players are rated on a scale from minus-2 to 10. Minus-2 indicates a novice player, while a player rated at 10 goals has the highest handicap possible. It is so difficult to attain a 10-goal handicap that there are fewer than two dozen in the world, and about two-thirds of all players handicapped are rated at two goals or less. Currently, most living ten-goal players are Argentine, with few exceptions. Handicaps of five goals and above generally belong to professional players. It is not (nor has it ever been) an estimate of the number of goals a player might score in a game, but rather of the player's worth to their team. Cowdray Park, West Sussex
Cowdray Park is a country house at the centre of the Cowdray Estate in Midhurst, West Sussex. The park lies in the South Downs National Park. The estate belongs to Viscount Cowdray, whose family have owned it since 1909. It has a golf course, and it offers clay pigeon shooting and corporate activity days, as well as the more traditional activities of agriculture, forestry and property lets. History The estate was owned by the Bohun family from approximately 1185. Sir David Owen, son of Owen Tudor, built Cowdray House in the 16th century. His son sold the estate to William FitzWilliam, 1st Earl of Southampton in 1529. His half-brother Sir Anthony Browne inherited the estate in 1542. Oxford University Polo Club
The Oxford University Polo Club (often referred to as OUPC) is the Discretionary Full Blue sports club for competitive polo at Oxford University. Founded in 1874, it is one of the four oldest continuing polo clubs worldwide. Its annual Varsity Match against Cambridge University Polo Club, established in 1878, is the second oldest continuing polo fixture in the Western world. It is played at Guards Polo Club, England, usually at the beginning of June. The last Varsity Match won by Oxford was in 2022, defeating Cambridge 8–2. The Guards Polo Club is an English polo club in Windsor, Berkshire. It was most closely associated with the British Royal Family. Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh was President of the club from its formation on 25 January 1955 until his death in April 2021. Queen Elizabeth II was its patron.
