Salford City Council elections are generally held three years out of every four, with a third of the council being elected each time. Salford City Council is the local authority for the metropolitan borough of Salford in Greater Manchester, England. Since the last boundary changes in 2020, 60 councillors have been elected from 20 wards. Political control From 1889 to 1974 Salford was a county borough, independent of any county council. Under the Local Government Act 1972 it had its territory enlarged and became a metropolitan borough, with Greater Manchester County Council providing county-level services. The first election to the reconstituted city council was held in 1973, initially operating as a shadow authority before coming into its revised powers on 1 April 1974. Paul Dennett
Paul Dennett is a Labour Party politician who is the current elected Mayor of the City of Salford and the Deputy Mayor of Greater Manchester, England. Early life Dennett was born in Warrington and grew up working class. His father worked for a power station and was an active trade unionist and his mother was a housewife and house cleaner. His parents would later run The Engine Pub in Prescot, Merseyside. He attended Park Road Primary School and Great Sankey High School, before working in customer services at a BT call centre. He received a BA in International Business from the University of Ulster, an MSc in Human Resource Management and Industrial Relations from the Manchester Business School, and an MRES in Social Sciences from Manchester Metropolitan University. While at university, Dennett worked as an HR adviser and as a lecturer at Manchester Metropolitan University Business School. Career Dennett joined the Labour Party in 2007.
