The Germanic languages are a branch of the Indo-European language family spoken natively by a population of about 515 million people mainly in Europe, North America, Oceania and Southern Africa. Arnold Lang
Arnold Lang (18 June 1855 – 30 November 1914) was a Swiss naturalist, a comparative anatomist and student of German biologist Ernst Haeckel. Biography In March 1876 he earned his PhD from the University of Jena, and two months later became habilitated as a privat-docent of zoology at the University of Bern. From 1878 to 1885 he was stationed at the Zoological Station in Naples, where he conducted research on wildlife native to the Gulf of Naples. In 1889 he became a professor of zoology and comparative anatomy at the University of Zurich and the '' Eidgenössische Polytechnikum'' as well as director of two institutions' zoological collections. Hermann Lang
Hermann Lang (6 April 1909 – 19 October 1987) was a German racing driver who raced motorcycles, Grand Prix cars, and sports cars. Prewar racing Born in Cannstatt near Stuttgart, Baden-Württemberg, Germany, at age fourteen, Hermann Lang had to go to work to help support his family following the death of his father. Young Lang found a job as a motorcycle mechanic, eventually buying his own used bike with which he began amateur racing. He won the very first race he entered and before long decided to compete in the sidecar class. At age twenty-two, he won the German sidecar mountain race championship. Lang's big break came when he landed a job at the Mercedes factory where he became part of their Grand Prix motor racing team. Hedi Lang
Hedi Lang (30 October 1931 – 31 March 2004) was a Swiss politician. She was one of the first women to be elected to the Swiss National Council, the first woman elected to a cantonal executive and the second woman to serve as President of the National Council. She was a member of the Social Democratic Party. Biography Hedi Lang was born on 30 October 1931 in Uster to Johann Gehri, a cheesemaker from Seedorf, Bern. She married Ernst Lang in 1957 and apprenticed at banks for several years before joining the staff of ''Die Arbeit'', the socialist newspaper where her husband was the editor. In 1961, she joined the Social Democratic Party and in 1970, she was elected to the council of Wetzikon, where she and Ernst moved after their marriage. In the 1971 Swiss federal election, women were permitted to vote in federal elections for the first time. Harold Lang (1923 – 16 November 1970) was a RADA-trained British character actor of stage and screen. During the 1950s, in particular, played many sly or menacing roles in B-films. At one time he managed his own theatrical company. From 1960, Lang, a devotee of Stanislavski, also taught acting at Central School of Speech and Drama; and director John Schlesinger filmed his work in a documentary, ''The Class'', for BBC TV's Monitor, in 1961. Gerhard Lang
Gerhard Lang (* October 21, 1924, in Ravensburg; † June 19, 2016, in Biberach an der Riß) was a German botanist with a research focus on vegetation ecology, geobotany and vegetation history of the Quaternary. Personal life and academic career During his high school years in Ravensburg, Lang was one of the students of Karl Bertsch. He started his studies on botany and zoology with minors in chemistry and physics at the University of Freiburg in 1946 and changed to the University of Göttingen where he received the PhD degree in 1952 for his study on the late-glacial history of the vegetation and flora of southwestern Germany, supervised by Franz Firbas. Between 1952 and 1975 Lang worked at the Landessammlungen für Naturkunde (today: Staatliches Museum für Naturkunde) in Karlsruhe as curator and as deputy director of the museum. Eva Lang (born January 10, 1947 in Stuttgart) is a German economist. Before her retirement, she was full professor at Bundeswehr University Munich for economic policy in special consideration of political economy. Vita Lang studied economics and political science and obtained her doctorate and habilitation on the topics of infrastructure, business cycle theory and public finance. After an assistantship at University of Würzburg, she was appointed to a professorship at Fachhochschule Westküste in Heide, Germany. Starting in 1996, she was professor at Bundeswehr University Munich. Don Lang (born Gordon Langhorn; 19 January 1925 – 3 August 1992) was an English trombonist and singer who led Don Lang and his Frantic Five. Biography Lang was born in Halifax, England on 19 January 1925. He and his band appeared on ''Six-Five Special'', the first BBC Television show for teenagers, from 1957. In 1958, his cover version of "Witch Doctor" reached the Top 10 of the UK Singles Chart. Lang played trombone on the song " Revolution 1" on The Beatles' '' 'White Album'''. David Marshall Lang (6 May 1924 – 20 March 1991), was a Professor of Caucasian Studies, School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. He was one of the most productive British scholars who specialized in Georgian, Armenian and ancient Bulgarian history. Czesław Lang (born 17 May 1955 in Kołczygłowy) is a Polish former road racing cyclist. He was a bronze medalist at the 1977 UCI Road World Championships in San Cristóbal and a silver medalist at the 1979 UCI Road World Championships in Valkenburg, both in the men's amateur team time trial. He was also the winner of the 1980 edition of the Tour de Pologne. Craig Sellar Lang (13 May 1891 – 24 Nov 1971) was a New Zealand-born British organist, composer and music teacher. Education Born in Hastings, New Zealand, CS Lang (known to his friends as "Robin") was educated at Clifton College, and was a pupil of Walter Parratt and Charles Stanford at the Royal College of Music. He was an ARCM and received his Doctorate of Music from The University of Durham. Teaching Lang returned to Clifton as assistant music master in 1921. His works from this period include the secular cantata ''Lochinvar'' (Op. 7, 1927), ''Two Hundred Tunes for Sight-Singing'' (1928) based on his teaching experience, and a variety of arrangements and new works created so the entire school congregation could join the choir and organ in psalms and canticles.
