Lakshmipur-2 is a constituency represented in the Jatiya Sangsad (National Parliament) of Bangladesh since 2019 by independent politician Mohammad Shahid Islam. Boundaries The constituency encompasses Raipur Upazila and eight union parishads of Lakshmipur Sadar Upazila: Basikpur, Char Ruhita, Dakshin Hamchadi, Dalal Bazar, Parbati Nagar, Shak Char, Tum Char, and Uttar Hamchadi. History The constituency was created in 1984 from a Noakhali constituency when the former Noakhali District was split into three districts: Feni, Noakhali, and Lakshmipur. Lakshmipur ( bn, লক্ষ্মীপুর, Lokkhipur), also spelt Laxmipur, with an area of 1455.96 km2, is a district of Bangladesh. It is bordered by Chandpur to the north, Bhola and Noakhali districts to the south, Noakhali to the east, and Barisal and Bhola districts to the west. Mohammad Shahid Islam (known as Kazi Papul; born 18 May 1963) is a Bangladeshi businessman, politician and a former Jatiya Sangsad member representing the Lakshmipur-2 constituency during 2018–2021 as an independent candidate. 2018 Bangladeshi General Election
General elections were held in Bangladesh on 30 December 2018 to elect 300 directly-elected members of the Jatiya Sangsad. The result was a landslide victory for the Awami League led by Sheikh Hasina. According to political scientist Ali Riaz, the elections were not free and fair. The BBC News reported that they were marred by violence and allegations of vote rigging. Opposition leader Kamal Hossain rejected the results, calling it "farcical" and demanding fresh elections to be held under a neutral government.
