Lake Tawakoni
Lake Tawakoni ( ) is a reservoir located in Northeast Texas, about east of Dallas. It lies within three Texas counties, Hunt, Rains, and Van Zandt. It is used for water supply and recreation. It is under the Sabine River Authority of Texas and the original headwaters of the Sabine are converged under the lake surface. Etymology The lake was named for the Tawakoni Native American peoples, who were a larger part of the Caddo Nation. The Caddos inhabited a large swath of North and East Texas, including where the lake is located. History The reservoir was constructed in 1960 with the Iron Bridge Dam. The area was chosen due to its location to the growing Dallas area and the growth east of the city and its respective suburbs. The South Fork, Cowleech Fork, and Caddo Forks that all formed the Sabine River headwaters are now submerged under the lake and the lake now serves as the headwaters of the Sabine. Hunt County, Texas
Hunt County is a county in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2020 census, its population was 99,956. Its county seat is Greenville. The county is named for Memucan Hunt, Jr., the first Republic of Texas Minister to the United States from 1837 to 1838 and the third Texas Secretary of the Navy from 1838 to 1839. Hunt County is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth- Arlington metropolitan statistical area. ''Quercus stellata'', the post oak or iron oak, is a North American species of oak in the white oak section. It is a slow-growing oak that lives in dry areas on the edges of fields, tops of ridges also grows in poor soils, and is resistant to rot, fire, and drought. Interbreeding occurs among white oaks, thus many hybrid species combinations occur. The species is native to the eastern and central United States, and found along the east coast from Massachusetts to Florida, and as far inland as Nebraska. East Tawakoni
East Tawakoni ( ) is a city in Rains County, Texas, United States. The population was 883 at the 2010 census. East Tawakoni is located on the east side of Lake Tawakoni, while its twin city West Tawakoni is located on the west side of the lake. History Marketed as a relaxed rural community with easy access to Dallas, East Tawakoni was established on June 6, 1967, after an election in which 30 of 45 residents voted in favor of incorporation. A mayor (Grady A. Whitehead) and five aldermen (Raymond Briggs, A.L. Williams, D.A. "Doc" Vincent, A.O. Murphrey, and T.E. Bell) were elected on June 27, 1967. In a local option election held on February 6, 1968, residents voted 38–32 (54.3%–45.7%) in favor of selling alcoholic beverages. West Tawakoni ( ) is a city in Hunt County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,895 at the 2020 census. West Tawakoni is located on the west side of Lake Tawakoni, while its twin city East Tawakoni is located on the east side of the lake in Rains County. Geography West Tawakoni is located in southeastern Hunt County at (32.902544, –96.024452). It is bordered on three sides by Lake Tawakoni, a reservoir on the Sabine River. To the north is the lake's Caddo Inlet, to the south are Waco Bay and Kitsee Inlet, and to the east is the main body of the lake.
