Lake Jackson (Leon County, Florida)
Lake Jackson is a shallow, prairie lake on the north side of Leon County, Florida, United States, near Tallahassee, with two major depressions or sinkholes known as Porter Sink and Lime Sink. The lake is located in the Red Hills Region, and has fluctuated from periods of being dry to a maximum elevation of above sea level. The lake is approximately long and its area is . There is no outflow from streams or runoff. Geography Interstate 10 runs across the southern tip of the lake. There is another Lake Jackson and Little Lake Jackson in Sebring, Florida, not related to the current article. The Lake Jackson Mounds Archaeological State Park is located adjacent to the lake. Lake Jackson Mounds Archaeological State Park
Lake Jackson Mounds Archaeological State Park (8LE1) is one of the most important archaeological sites in Florida, the capital of chiefdom and ceremonial center of the Fort Walton Culture inhabited from 1050–1500. The complex originally included seven earthwork mounds, a public plaza and numerous individual village residences. One of several major mound sites in the Florida Panhandle, the park is located in northern Tallahassee, on the south shore of Lake Jackson. The complex has been managed as a Florida State Park since 1966. On May 6, 1971, the site was listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places as reference number 71000241. Fort Walton culture The site was built and occupied between 1000 and 1500 by people of the Fort Walton culture, the southernmost expression of the Mississippian culture. Lake Jackson, covering 3,212 acres (12.95 km), is located within the city of Sebring, Florida. Sebring is the county seat of Highlands County. Lake Jackson, a healthy freshwater lake, is approximately 25 feet (8 m) at its deepest. Most of the area is fairly shallow. The water is clear as compared to most lakes and the shores are sandy. The lake has various boat ramps, including the popular public ramp at Veterans Beach on the lake's west side. Most ramps are private and there are many private beaches. Three public swimming beaches exist. One at Veterans Beach, at the north end of Lake Jackson, and Hidden Beach, near Faith Lutheran Church, and City Pier Beach is located just to the west of downtown Sebring. Lake Jackson is a city in Brazoria County, Texas, United States, within the Greater Houston metropolitan area. As of the 2020 census, the city population was 28,177. In 1942 a portion of Lake Jackson was first developed as a company town for workers of the Dow Chemical Company; it developed 5,000 acres on the former Abner Jackson Plantation. An oxbow lake was also named after the planter, whose house was located at the lake. Minor ruins of the Lake Jackson Plantation can now be seen in a park at the site. History The city was built in the early 1940s as a planned community, designed by Alden B. Dow of Midland, Michigan for workers in support of a new plant of the Dow Chemical Company, which his father owned. Origins It is where the remnants of the original small town are now, that Buckhall School (formerly Oak Hill School) a one-room school house, was built in 1865, around which the village then grew up. Adjacent to the site of the school, a general store was built, which was gutted by a fire on August 21, 2007. By October 2008, however, refurbishment of the Buckhall store had been completed, and it re-opened under new management. Little Lake Jackson is a lake, located within the city of Sebring, Florida. It has a maximum depth of . On the north side is U.S. Highway 27 and across from that is Lake Jackson. The lake has no public access directly, although it is connected by a short canal to Lake Jackson, which has a public boat ramp. Activities on the lake include boating and fishing. A golf course overlooks the southwest side and various businesses adjoin it on the north, along US 27. A hotel, Inn on the Lakes, is on its north shore. Historic Harder Hall, partially renovated but abandoned because of the developer's financial problems, is on the northwest shore.
