Lake Charles (French: ''Lac Charles'') is the fifth-largest incorporated city in the U.S. state of Louisiana, and the parish seat of Calcasieu Parish, located on Lake Charles, Prien Lake, and the Calcasieu River. Founded in 1861 in Calcasieu Parish, it is a major industrial, cultural, and educational center in the southwest region of the state. As of the 2020 U.S. census, Lake Charles's population was 84,872. The Western Professional Hockey League (abbreviated WPHL) is a defunct minor professional ice hockey league. The WPHL operated from 1996 to 2001 with teams based in the southern United States, primarily Texas and Louisiana. The league started with six teams in the 1996–97 season and grew to 18 teams in 1999–00. After the 2000–01 season, the WPHL merged with the Central Hockey League. Lake Charles Civic Center
Sudduth Coliseum, in the Lake Charles Civic Center, is a 7,450-seat multi-purpose arena in Lake Charles, Louisiana, USA. Located on Lakeshore Drive, it is the main arena of the Lake Charles Civic Center. It is a venue for hosting concerts and special events, including the 2006 Louisiana State Choir festival and Contraband Days. The center is named for former Lake Charles Mayor James Sudduth. It also serves as a host for gun shows, professional wrestling, dance performances, professional and amateur fights, school field trips and The National Day of Prayer ceremony in Lake Charles. Contraband Days is a large festival held on the grounds. The center served as a shelter for displaced residents whose homes were devastated by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. John Hanson (ice Hockey)
John Hanson ( – November 15, 1783) was an American Founding Father, merchant, and politician from Maryland during the Revolutionary Era. In 1779, Hanson was elected as a delegate to the Continental Congress after serving in a variety of roles for the Patriot cause in Maryland. He signed the Articles of Confederation in 1781 after Maryland joined the other states in ratifying them. In November 1781, he was elected as the first President of the Confederation Congress (sometimes styled ''President of the United States in Congress assembled''), following ratification of the articles. For this reason, some of Hanson's biographers have argued that he was actually the first holder of the office of President of the United States. Darcy Verot (born July 13, 1976) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey forward. Career Verot, undrafted, is a former professional hockey player of the National Hockey League. A veteran and fan favorite of the American Hockey League, he is one of the few professional players to ever work his way up to the NHL from the WPHL (Western Pacific Hockey League). He ended his career in the Kontinental Hockey League, of Russia, retiring in 2013. Tracey Katelnikoff
Tracey Katelnikoff (born July 17, 1968) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player. Katelnikoff played four seasons (1985 to 1989) of major junior hockey in the Western Hockey League, scoring 156 goals and 149 assists for 305 points, while earning 280 penalty minutes, in 267 games played. He then attended the University of Calgary where he was named to the Canada West Second All-Star team in three consecutive seasons (1993 to 1995) before commencing his professional career in Europe. Katelnikoff made his Deutsche Eishockey Liga debut with SC Riessersee during the 1995-96 season, but played the majority of his European games in Germany's 2nd Bundesliga. Dennis Maruk
Dennis John Maruk (born November 17, 1955) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player of Ukrainian descent. He played in the National Hockey League (NHL) from 1975 to 1989, scoring a career-high 60 goals for the Washington Capitals in 1981–82. Career As a youth, Maruk played in the 1968 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament with a minor ice hockey team from Etobicoke. Maruk played junior "A" hockey in the Ontario Hockey League for the London Knights before he was drafted in 1975 by the California Golden Seals. While with the Seals, he became the first NHL rookie to score five shorthanded goals in a season. Nolan McDonald
Nolan McDonald (born July 29, 1977) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey goaltender. He was selected by the Vancouver Canucks in the 6th round (147th overall) of the 1996 NHL Entry Draft. McDonald spent the majority of his professional career playing in the German 2nd Bundesliga where, in 2003, he was selected as the Goaltender of the Year. Graeme Townshend
Graeme Scott Townshend (born October 23, 1965) is a Jamaican-born Canadian retired ice hockey right winger. He was the first Jamaican-born player to play in the National Hockey League (NHL), and played 45 games in the NHL between 1990 and 1993. The rest of his career, which lasted from 1989 to 1999, was spent in the minor leagues.
