Laitumkhrah
Laitumkhrah (Khasi: ''lait'' meaning "free" and ''umkhrah'' which is the name of a river ''Umkhrah'') is a census town in Shillong, Meghalaya, India. The name of the place basically means a place where the river "Umkhrah" originates from making its name aptly suited. From Laitumkhrah there are three roads connecting Happy Valley (Them Basuk), Umpling & New Colony. The area is one of the costlier areas in Shillong but staying here itself is an experience. Laitumkhrah is filled with old historical buildings but with constant development in the area, most of the older buildings have been replaced with modern buildings. This place is relatively cold compared to other places of Shillong. Laitumkhrah is the heart of Shillong. The area has a number of churches, schools and colleges. The Cathedral of Mary Help of Christians is a cathedral in Shillong, Meghalaya, India. It is the cathedral church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Shillong and serves as the seat of the Metropolitan Archbishop of Shillong. It covers the districts of East Khasi Hills and Ri-Bhoi, in which there are 35 church districts or "Parishes". The Cathedral, built over 50 years ago, is the principal place of worship of the over 342,169 Catholics of the Shillong Archdiocese. Shillong, Meghalaya
Shillong () is a hill station and the capital of Meghalaya, a state in northeastern India, which means "The Abode of Clouds". It is the headquarters of the East Khasi Hills district. Shillong is the 330th most populous city in India with a population of 143,229 according to the 2011 census. It is said that the rolling hills around the town reminded the British of Scotland. Hence, they would also refer to it as the "Scotland of the East". Shillong has steadily grown in size since it was made the civil station of the Khasi and Jaintia Hills in 1864 by the British.
