Laird Hill, Texas
Laird Hill is an unincorporated community in northwestern Rusk County, Texas, United States. According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had a population of 405 in 2000. It is located within the Longview, Texas metropolitan area. History The area in what is known as Laird Hill today was named for a local family of settlers. It was originally known as Pistol Hill during the East Texas oil boom. The community's first postmaster was Ignatius S. Crutcher, who was appointed in 1936. Its population was 500 in 1940 with eight businesses; this went down to 461 and four businesses in 1970 and ended at 405 from 1980 through 2000, and the number of businesses went up from one to five. On April 25, 1957, an F3 tornado struck the community. Geography Laird Hill is located on Texas State Highway 42, just southwest of Kilgore on the northern boundary of Rusk County. Lumberjacks are mostly North American workers in the logging industry who perform the initial harvesting and transport of trees for ultimate processing into forest products. The term usually refers to loggers in the era (before 1945 in the United States) when trees were felled using hand tools and dragged by oxen to rivers. Texas State Highway 135
State Highway 135 (SH 135) is a state highway in the U.S. state of Texas that runs from Jacksonville to near Gladewater. History SH 135 was designated on June 22, 1928, from Troup to the Rusk County Line. On March 19, 1930, it was extended to Gladewater, replacing SH 15A. On October 27, 1953, an extension to Jacksonville along FM 347 was signed but not designated. On February 20, 1963, SH 135 was rerouted concurrent with SH 42, with the old route being transferred to FM 918 and Spur 378. The extension to Jacksonville was official designated on August 29, 1990, completing the current route and cancelling this section of FM 347. Texas State Highway 42
State Highway 42 (SH 42) is a state highway located in the northeastern portion of the Texas in Gregg and Rusk Counties. This route was designated on December 12, 1962, over former SH 259 because of the creation of US 259 (which replaced cancelled SH 26) through Kilgore, which it intersected. Previous routes SH 42 was originally proposed on April 22, 1919, as a route from Greenville to Marshall. On August 21, 1923, the northwest terminus extended north to Sherman, replacing a section of SH 11. The section of SH 42 from Alba to Marshall was cancelled; SH 42 was instead rerouted to end in Mineola. On January 21, 1924, the section from Alba to Mineola was cancelled. East Texas Oil Field
The East Texas Oil Field is a large oil and gas field in east Texas. Covering and parts of five counties, and having 30,340 historic and active oil wells, it is the second-largest oil field in the United States outside Alaska, and first in total volume of oil recovered since its discovery in 1930. Over of oil have been produced from it to-date. It is a component of the Mid-continent oil province, the huge region of petroleum deposits extending from Kansas to New Mexico to the Gulf of Mexico.
