Lahti Ski Games
Lahti Ski Games is an annual international Nordic skiing tournament. The games last for three days, during which participants compete in cross-country skiing, ski jumping, and Nordic combined. In the nearly 90-year history of the Lahti Ski Games, the fireworks seen on Saturday night have become one of the highlights of the event. The goal of establishing the games was to hold a Finland competition similar to the Holmenkollen Ski Festival. The cross-country skiing stadium & ski jump stadium is together with Holmenkollen in Oslo possibly the best stadium for such events in the world. From the large covered stands the attendees can see the skiers, first at the top of the hill on the opposite side, after a couple seconds with viewing blocked they then come out of a part of the surrounding woods, down a slope which ends in a dangerous left turn, and now the skiers are inside the stadium with the long U-turn to the finish just below the covered stand. Lauri Pihkala
Lauri "Tahko" Pihkala (born Gummerus, 5 January 1888 – 20 May 1981) was the inventor of pesäpallo, the Finnish variant of baseball. In 1969 he became one of the first persons to receive an honorary doctorate in Sport Sciences from the University of Jyväskylä, together with president Urho Kekkonen and Professor Kaarina Kari. Urho Kekkonen
Urho Kaleva Kekkonen (; 3 September 1900 – 31 August 1986), often referred to by his initials UKK, was a Finnish politician who served as the eighth and longest-serving president of Finland from 1956 to 1982. He also served as Prime Minister of Finland, prime minister (1950–53, 1954–56), and held various other cabinet positions. Kyösti Kallio (; 10 April 1873 – 19 December 1940) was a Finnish politician of the Agrarian League who served as the fourth president of Finland from 1937–1940; his presidency included leading the country through the Winter War. Lahti Ski Museum
Lahti Ski Museum is a sports museum located in Lahti, Finland, specialising in skiing and other winter sports. It is situated in the city's main sports complex adjacent to the Salpausselkä ski-jumping venue. History The museum traces its roots back to 1959, when the first exhibits were put on by the local winter sports club, ''Lahden Hiihtoseura'' (literally, 'Lahti skiing society'). The City of Lahti took over the activity in 1974, and the museum has formed part of the Lahti municipal museum since. The first purpose-built facility opened in 1989, designed by architect Esko Hämäläinen. The exterior of the building was redesigned in 2000 (shown in the picture) by Pekka Salminen, and the entire building underwent a renovation in 2017. Lahti
Lahti (; sv, Lahtis) is a city and municipality in Finland. It is the capital of the region of Päijänne Tavastia (Päijät-Häme) and its growing region is one of the main economic hubs of Finland. Tapani Niku (born ''Karsikas'', 1 April 1895 – 6 April 1989) was a Finnish cross-country skier who competed at the 1924 Winter Olympics. He won a bronze medal in the 18 km event and failed to finish his 50 km event. At the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships 1926 he placed sixth over 50 km and 13th over 18 km. Anton Johannes Collin (12 October 1891 – 31 May 1973) was a Finnish cross country skier and road cyclist.
