The Lagos Lawn Tennis Club (established 1895) is the oldest club in Nigeria. The Club which occupies approximately 14,000 square meters, is located at 12, Tafawa Balewa Square, in Lagos Island. The Lagos Lawn Tennis Club plays host to several tennis tournaments with the Governor's Cup Lagos Tennis Championship (GCLT), an annual ITF Pro-Circuit competition with $100,000 prize money, being the most reputable. Tafawa Balewa Square
The Tafawa Balewa Square, (TBS) is a ceremonial ground (originally called "Race Course") in Lagos Island, Lagos. History Lagos Race Course now TBS, was a sports field that hosted horse racing, but included a section for football and ground to play cricket. The land was provided to colonial authorities by Oba Dosunmu in 1859, who thereafter, built up the surrounding areas. The course was later demolished by the government of Yakubu Gowon to make way for Tafawa Balewa Square. In its hey days, the course hosted the Empire Day parades. The horse racing track was about seven to eight furlongs or a mile. In 1960, the course was redeveloped to celebrate Nigeria's independence and the lowering of the union jack. Location TBS was constructed in 1972 over the site of a defunct rack for horse racing. Lagos Island
Lagos Island (''Ìsàlẹ̀ Èkó'') is the principal and central local government area (LGA) in Lagos, it was the capital of Lagos State until 1957. It is part of the Lagos Division. As of the preliminary 2006 Nigerian census, the LGA had a population of 209,437 in an area of 8.7 km2. The LGA only covers the western half of Lagos Island; the eastern half is simply referred to as Lagos Island East LCDA. Olatunji Ajisomo Alabi
Olatunji Ajisomo Abubakar Sadiq Alabi (20 February 1915 – 14 November 1998), commonly known as Lord Rumens, was a Nigerian business magnate, philanthropist, and social figure. Born in Oke-Ona, Abeokuta, Nigeria, he was a member of the Egba tribe. Personal life Lord Rumens attended Holy Trinity School in Abeokuta and later Methodist Boys High School in Lagos, graduating in 1934. He pursued a career at Total Oil Nigeria Ltd for many years. In 1994, he published an autobiography titled "Lord Rumens," reflecting on his life's journey. In the autobiography, he also expressed concerns about the state of tennis in Nigeria, stating, "Those who have been entrusted to run our tennis club and championship have been less than serious." During his lifetime, Lord Rumens gained recognition for importing Carrara Marble into Lagos, Nigeria, and for his enthusiasm for tennis. Lagos Yacht Club
The Lagos Yacht Club (LYC) is one of the oldest sporting club in Nigeria. The yacht club was founded in 1932. It is located south of Tafawa Balewa Square and the National Museum; all in Lagos Island, across the bridge leading to Victoria Island. Facilities at the harbour also include several sailing boats and other sport activities which take place at the club house. The club was founded by expatriate sailing lovers in Lagos, among whom were C.J. Webb, Jessie Horne, R.M. Williams and H.A. Whittaker. A regatta held in 1931 to coincide with the visit of H.M.S. Cardiff and the German cruiser Emden generated interest in sailing. At inception, the club had over 20 members. Recurring Events The Lagos Club hosts the annual Whispering Palms regatta.
