Lagos Yacht Club
The Lagos Yacht Club (LYC) is one of the oldest sporting club in Nigeria. The yacht club was founded in 1932. It is located south of Tafawa Balewa Square and the National Museum; all in Lagos Island, across the bridge leading to Victoria Island. Facilities at the harbour also include several sailing boats and other sport activities which take place at the club house. The club was founded by expatriate sailing lovers in Lagos, among whom were C.J. Webb, Jessie Horne, R.M. Williams and H.A. Whittaker. A regatta held in 1931 to coincide with the visit of H.M.S. Cardiff and the German cruiser Emden generated interest in sailing. At inception, the club had over 20 members. Recurring Events The Lagos Club hosts the annual Whispering Palms regatta. Lagos Island
Lagos Island (''Ìsàlẹ̀ Èkó'') is the principal and central local government area (LGA) in Lagos, it was the capital of Lagos State until 1957. It is part of the Lagos Division. As of the preliminary 2006 Nigerian census, the LGA had a population of 209,437 in an area of 8.7 km2. The LGA only covers the western half of Lagos Island; the eastern half is simply referred to as Lagos Island East LCDA. A yacht club is a sports club specifically related to yachting. Description Yacht clubs are mostly located by the sea, although there some that have been established at a lake or riverside locations. Yacht or sailing clubs have either a marina or a delimited section of the beach or shoreline with buoys marking the areas off-limits for swimmers as well as safe offshore anchorages. Tafawa Balewa Square
The Tafawa Balewa Square, (TBS) is a ceremonial ground (originally called "Race Course") in Lagos Island, Lagos. History Lagos Race Course now TBS, was a sports field that hosted horse racing, but included a section for football and ground to play cricket. The land was provided to colonial authorities by Oba Dosunmu in 1859, who thereafter, built up the surrounding areas. The course was later demolished by the government of Yakubu Gowon to make way for Tafawa Balewa Square. In its hey days, the course hosted the Empire Day parades. The horse racing track was about seven to eight furlongs or a mile. In 1960, the course was redeveloped to celebrate Nigeria's independence and the lowering of the union jack. Victoria Island (Nigeria)
Victoria Island (VI) is an affluent area that encompasses a former island of the same name neighbouring Lagos Island, Ikoyi and the Lekki Peninsula by the Lagos Lagoon. It is the main business and finance, financial centre of Lagos State, Nigeria. Victoria Island is one of the most exclusive and expensive areas to reside in Lagos. ''Emden'' was a light cruiser built for the German Navy (''Reichsmarine'') in the early 1920s. She was the only ship of her class and was the first large warship built in Germany after the end of World War I.
