Lagertha Munthe
Lagertha Munthe (16 March 1888 – 25 March 1984) was a Norwegian painter. She was born in Kristiania as a daughter of Olaf Andreas Jens Wilhelm Munthe (1851–1914). She was a grandniece of historian and cartographer Gerhard Munthe, a niece of historian Hartvig Andreas Munthe, painter Gerhard Munthe, writer Margrethe Munthe and Major General Carl Oscar Munthe, and a first cousin of librarian Wilhelm Munthe and genealogist Christopher Morgenstierne Munthe. She studied at the Norwegian National Academy of Fine Arts from 1909 to 1911, under notable painters such as Christian Krohg, Halfdan Strøm, Oluf Wold-Torne and Henrik Sørensen. Halfdan Strøm
Halfdan Strøm (4 November 1863 – 28 March 1949) was a Norwegian painter and an early representative of realism in Norwegian painting. He attended the Royal Drawing School in Christiania (nor Oslo). In 1883, he debuted at the Industrial and Art Exhibition at Tullinløkka, site of the Norwegian Geographical Survey in Oslo. During the period 1883–84, he was in Munich. During 1884, he participated in an outdoor academy conducted by Frits Thaulow in Modum. In 1889, he entered two paintings at the World Exhibition in Paris and achieved an honorable mention. Later Strøm earned gold medals at the World Exhibition of Paris in 1900, as well as international exhibits in Munich in 1901 and San Francisco in 1915. Strøm was a professor at the Norwegian National Academy of Fine Arts from 1909 to 1935, and Director there from 1924. The National Gallery ( no, Nasjonalgalleriet) is a gallery in Oslo, Norway. Originally located in the Royal Palace, Oslo, it got its own museum building in 1882, designed by Heinrich Ernst and Adolf Schirmer. Landscape painting, also known as landscape art, is the depiction of natural scenery such as mountains, valleys, trees, rivers, and forests, especially where the main subject is a wide view—with its elements arranged into a coherent composition. In other works, landscape backgrounds for figures can still form an important part of the work. Sky is almost always included in the view, and weather is often an element of the composition. Detailed landscapes as a distinct subject are not found in all artistic traditions, and develop when there is already a sophisticated tradition of representing other subjects. Henrik Sørensen
Henrik Sørensen (12 February 1882 – 24 February 1962) was a Norwegian painter. Personal life Sørensen was born in Fryksände in Sweden as a son of Severin Sørensen and Helene Høibraaten. He was married to Gudrun Klewe, and is father of physicist Sven Oluf Sørensen. He was a brother-in-law of composer Halfdan Cleve. Painting career Sørensen studied drawing at the Norwegian National Academy of Craft and Art Industry in Kristiania in 1904 and from 1906 to 1908. He studied with Kristian Zahrtmann in Copenhagen from 1904 to 1905, and became fascinated by the French impressionists while studying at the art school Académie Colarossi in Paris during the autumn of 1905. He studied painting with Henri Matisse in Paris from 1908 to 1910. His breakthrough was the painting ''Svartbækken'' from 1908. Oluf Wold-Torne
Oluf Wold-Torne (7 November 1867 – 19 March 1919) was a Norwegian painter, illustrator, educator and designer. He was known primarily for landscapes and still-lifes and was influenced by Cézanne. Biography He was born in Son (now Vestby), Norway. He was the son of Oluf Emil Wold (1826–67) and Marie Therese Ottesen (1838–193). His father had been in the timber business, but went bankrupt and died before he was born. In 1869 his mother married merchant Søren Thorne (1817-1900). He grew up in the village of Hølen in Akershus where his step-father owned a general store. After displaying some artistic talent, his relatives sent him for his first art lessons at the Royal Drawing School (now Norwegian National Academy of Craft and Art Industry) in 1887, under Wilhelm Peters. Christian Krohg
Christian Krohg (13 August 1852 – 16 October 1925) was a Norwegian naturalist painter, illustrator, author and journalist. Krohg was inspired by the realism art movement and often chose motifs from everyday life. He was the director and served as the first professor at the Norwegian Academy of Arts from 1909 to 1925. Biography Christian Krohg was born at Vestre Aker (now Oslo), Norway. He was one of five children born to Georg Anton Krohg (1817–1873) and Sophie Amalia Holst (1822–1861). He was a grandson of Christian Krohg (1777–1828) who had served as a government minister. His father was a civil servant, journalist and author.
