''Lady with the Rose (Charlotte Louise Burckhardt)'' is an 1882 painting by John Singer Sargent. It is part of the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. The subject of the painting, (Charlotte) Louise Burckhardt (1862—1892), was the twenty-year-old daughter of a Swiss merchant, members of the artist's cosmopolitan circle in Paris. She was the first wife of the fruit importer ("Banana King") Roger Ackerley, father of the writer J. R. Ackerley; she died after two years of marriage.The Letters of J. R. Ackerley, ed. Neville Braybrooke, Duckworth, 1975, p. 206 The monochromatic tones and emphasis on the figure's silhouette are reminiscent of the style of the Spanish painter Diego Velázquez, whose work Sargent had been encouraged to study by his Parisian teacher Carolus-Duran. John Singer Sargent
John Singer Sargent (; January 12, 1856 – April 14, 1925) was an American expatriate artist, considered the "leading portrait painter of his generation" for his evocations of Edwardian-era luxury. He created roughly 900 oil paintings and more than 2,000 watercolors, as well as countless sketches and charcoal drawings. His ''oeuvre'' documents worldwide travel, from Venice to the Tyrol, Corfu, Spain, the Middle East, Montana, Maine, and Florida. Born in Florence to American parents, he was trained in Paris before moving to London, living most of his life in Europe. He enjoyed international acclaim as a portrait painter. An early submission to the Paris Salon in the 1880s, his ''Portrait of Madame X'', was intended to consolidate his position as a society painter in Paris, but instead resulted in scandal.
