''Lady with the Rose (Charlotte Louise Burckhardt)'' is an 1882 painting by John Singer Sargent. It is part of the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. The subject of the painting, (Charlotte) Louise Burckhardt (1862—1892), was the twenty-year-old daughter of a Swiss merchant, members of the artist's cosmopolitan circle in Paris. She was the first wife of the fruit importer ("Banana King") Roger Ackerley, father of the writer J. R. Ackerley; she died after two years of marriage.The Letters of J. R. Ackerley, ed. John Singer Sargent (; January 12, 1856 – April 14, 1925) was an American expatriate artist, considered the "leading portrait painter of his generation" for his evocations of Edwardian-era luxury. He created roughly 900 oil paintings and more than 2,000 watercolors, as well as countless sketches and charcoal drawings. Diego Rodríguez de Silva y Velázquez (baptized June 6, 1599August 6, 1660) was a Spanish painter, the leading artist in the court of King Philip IV of Spain and Portugal, and of the Spanish Golden Age. He was an individualistic artist of the Baroque period (c.1600–1750). He began to paint in a precise tenebrist style, later developing a freer manner characterized by bold brushwork.
