Lacantún River
The Lacantún River is a river in Chiapas state of southern Mexico. It is a tributuary of the Usumacinta River. The Lacantún originates in the Chiapas Highlands, and runs southeastwards nearly to the Guatemalan border, where it turns northeastwards to join the Usumacinta River. Its main highlands tributary is the Jataté River. The lower portion of the river runs through the Lacandon Forest. Its tributary the Ixcán River, which originates in the Guatemalan Highlands to the south, joins the Lacantún near where it turns northwards. The Lacantún forms the southern boundary of Montes Azules and Lacan-Tun biosphere reserves before joining the Usumacinta. Usumacinta River
The Usumacinta River (; named after the howler monkey) is a river in southeastern Mexico and northwestern Guatemala. It is formed by the junction of the Pasión River, which arises in the Sierra de Santa Cruz (Guatemala), Sierra de Santa Cruz (in Guatemala) and the Salinas River (Guatemala), Salinas River, also known as the Chixoy River, Rio Chixoy, or the Rio Negro, which descends from the Sierra Madre de Chiapas, Sierra Madre de Guatemala. It defines part of the border between Guatemala and the Mexican state of Chiapas, then continues its northwesterly course, meandering through the Mexican state of Tabasco to the Gulf of Mexico. Lacandon Forest
The Lacandon Jungle (Spanish: ''Selva Lacandona'') is an area of rainforest which stretches from Chiapas, Mexico, into Guatemala. The heart of this rainforest is located in the Montes Azules Biosphere Reserve in Chiapas near the border with Guatemala in the Montañas del Oriente region of the state. Although much of the jungle outside the reserve has been cleared, the Lacandon is still one of the largest montane rainforests in Mexico. It contains 1,500 tree species, 33% of all Mexican bird species, 25% of all Mexican animal species, 56% of all Mexican diurnal butterflies and 16% of all Mexico's fish species. The Lacandon in Chiapas is also home to a number of important Mayan archaeological sites including Palenque, Yaxchilan and Bonampak, with numerous smaller sites which remain partially or fully unexcavated. Montes Azules Biosphere Reserve is a protected natural area in Chiapas state of southern Mexico. The reserve protects 3312 km2 of the Lacandon Jungle, a lowland tropical rainforest. Geography Montes Azules Biosphere reserve adjoins Lacan-Tun Biosphere Reserve on the east, and is bounded by the Lacantun River, a tributary of the Usumacinta, on the south.
