Lacan-Tun Biosphere Reserve
Lacan-Tun Biosphere Reserve is a protected natural area in southeastern Mexico. It is located in the Lacandon Forest of eastern Chiapas state, where it protects 618.74 km2 of lowland rain forest. Lacan-Tun reserve was established by the Mexican government in 1992. Lacandon Forest
The Lacandon Jungle (Spanish: ''Selva Lacandona'') is an area of rainforest which stretches from Chiapas, Mexico, into Guatemala. The heart of this rainforest is located in the Montes Azules Biosphere Reserve in Chiapas near the border with Guatemala in the Montañas del Oriente region of the state. Although much of the jungle outside the reserve has been cleared, the Lacandon is still one of the largest montane rainforests in Mexico. It contains 1,500 tree species, 33% of all Mexican bird species, 25% of all Mexican animal species, 56% of all Mexican diurnal butterflies and 16% of all Mexico's fish species. The Lacandon in Chiapas is also home to a number of important Mayan archaeological sites including Palenque, Yaxchilan and Bonampak, with numerous smaller sites which remain partially or fully unexcavated. Montes Azules Biosphere Reserve
Montes Azules Biosphere Reserve is a protected natural area in Chiapas state of southern Mexico. The reserve protects 3312 km2 of the Lacandon Jungle, a lowland tropical rainforest. Geography Montes Azules Biosphere reserve adjoins Lacan-Tun Biosphere Reserve on the east, and is bounded by the Lacantun River, a tributary of the Usumacinta, on the south. Flora and fauna The reserve contains 500 species of trees. More than 390 species of birds have been recorded in the reserve, almost half of all known species in Mexico.
