The Labour Party ( pl, Stronnictwo Pracy, SP) is a minor political party in Poland. It was formally called the Christian-Democratic Labour Faction ''( pl, Chrześcijańsko-Demokratyczne Stronnictwo Pracy, ChDSP)'' between 1989 and 2000. Stefan Marian Pastuszewski (born 19 August 1949 in Bydgoszcz, Poland) is a Polish poet, journalist and politician, former Member of Polish Sejm (1991–93), Vice-President of Bydgoszcz (1994-98), Member of Bydgoszcz City Council who represented the 1st district (since 2005). Between 1991 and 1993 he was a Member of the Sejm for Christian Democracy. He was elected from 17 Bydgoszcz district as the Christian Democratic Labour Party candidate. On 27 October 2002 he ran for Bydgoszcz City Council as a Law and Justice candidate in 1st district. He was placed second on the Law and Justice list and received 957 votes, failing to be elected. Since 1989, Poland has had a multi-party system, with numerous competing political parties. Individual parties normally do not manage to gain power alone, and usually work with other parties to form coalition governments. The transition from a mono-party Communist regime to liberal democracy and pluralism resulted in new political parties mushrooming in the early 1990s. The incumbent centre-left government of the Democratic Left Alliance (SLD) was soundly defeated. 2004 European Parliament Election In Poland
Elections to the European Parliament were held in Poland on 13 June 2004. 20.87% of eligible citizens voted; of these, 97.33% of the votes cast were valid. The elections resulted in a heavy defeat for the governing Alliance of the Democratic Left and Labor Union parties, although the very low turnout makes a direct comparison with national election results difficult. As expected the most successful party was the Civic Platform. Second place was taken by the strongly anti-EU League of Polish Families. The radical populist Self-Defence of the Republic of Poland, which some opinion polls had predicted would come second, came fourth after the Law and Justice party. Law and Justice ( pl, Prawo i Sprawiedliwość , PiS) is a right-wing populist and national-conservative political party in Poland. Its chairman is Jarosław Kaczyński. It was founded in 2001 by Jarosław and Lech Kaczyński as a direct successor of the Centre Agreement after it split from the Solidarity Electoral Action (AWS). It managed to win the 2005 parliamentary and presidential elections, after which Lech became the president of Poland. It headed a parliamentary coalition with the League of Polish Families and Self-Defence of the Republic of Poland between 2005 and the 2007 election.
