La Plata High School is part of the Charles County Public Schools and is located in La Plata, Maryland, United States. The current school was built in 1979. Before that, it was in the building (built in 1964) which now holds Milton M. Somers Middle School. History On November 9, 1926, the La Plata Elementary School was destroyed by a tornado that killed 13 students. That two room building was replaced by a new school that housed both an elementary and high school for La Plata. Demographics As of 2010, La Plata High School has an enrollment of 1,396 students with a demographic profile of 73.6% White, 22.6% Black, 1.7% Asian or Pacific Islander 1.5% Hispanic, and 0.7% American Indian. The Schoolwide Reading Proficiency is 85.8%, while the Schoolwide Math Proficiency is 91.9%. Zuberi Bakari Williams (born December 1, 1978) is an American attorney and jurist serving as an associate judge of the District Court of Maryland, for Montgomery County. He was appointed by former Governor Martin O'Malley in December 2014. He was later confirmed by the Maryland Senate and sworn in on January 6, 2015. Daryl Marcelus Thompson (born November 2, 1985) is an American professional baseball pitcher and pitching coach for the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball. La Plata is a town in Charles County, Maryland, United States. The population was 10,159 at the 2020 census. It is the county seat of Charles County. History According to an unconfirmed local story, the town was named by one Colonel Samuel Chapman, whose family owned of land in Charles County. The Colonel traveled to South America with his son George, who had contracted tuberculosis, in search of a cure. Donald Wayne Money (born June 7, 1947) is an American former professional baseball infielder who played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Philadelphia Phillies and Milwaukee Brewers, and in Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) for the Kintetsu Buffaloes.
