La Modelo
La Modelo (English: ''The Model rison') is a prison in Bogotá, Colombia. With 11,000 inmates, the facility is known for its violence. The prison's north wing accommodates left-wing rebels while the south wing has right-wing government supporters and paramilitaries. The area between these two wings is where many killings in the prison take place. Guards do not carry weapons in the prison, although the ones in the guard towers do control rifles. Prisoners from both sides have easy access to guns and even grenades. Members of Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) continue to drill in their section of the prison. There are restaurants in the prison and one sponsored by FARC provides free food to left-wing rebels. On 27 April 2000, over 100 prisoners were murdered in fighting. Jhon Jairo Velásquez Vásquez (April 15, 1962 – February 6, 2020), also known by the alias "Popeye" or "JJ", was a Colombian hitman, who was part of the criminal structure of the Medellín Cartel until his surrender to the Colombian justice system in 1992. Within this structure he claimed to be a lieutenant commanding half of the sicarios. Velásquez was born in the municipality of Yarumal, Antioquia, Colombia. He joined the Colombian National Army; later he was in the cadet school of the national police, only to leave days later joining the school of apprentices of the Colombian Navy where he earned the nickname "Popeye" because of his physical resemblance to the character. Tuluá Prison Riot
On 28 June 2022, a fire broke out during a riot inside a prison in Tuluá, Colombia killing at least 52 people and injuring at least 34. Background In Colombia, and many other Latin American countries, prisons are highly overcrowded with riots a common issue. Colombia's prison system which have the capacity to hold 81,000 inmates currently houses about 97,000 per official figures. In March 2020 a riot in the La Modelo prison in Bogota, killed 24 inmates and injured 90 others over fears of COVID-19. The Tuluá prison houses about 1,267 inmates and the cell block where the fire occurred housed 180, but the prison was operating at 117% capacity.
