LNWR Claughton Class
The London and North Western Railway (LNWR) Claughton Class was a class of 4-cylinder express passenger 4-6-0 steam locomotives. History The locomotives were introduced in 1913, the first of the class No. 2222 was named in honour of Sir Gilbert Claughton, who was the Chairman of the LNWR at that time. A total of 130 were built, all at Crewe Works up to 1921. Author Brian Reed points out that weight restrictions and equipment limitations at Crewe limited the size of the boiler, hence engine power. Cylinder design and valve events were not optimal, so the Claughton Class was a mediocre performer on the track. The LNWR reused numbers and names from withdrawn locomotives, with the result that the numbering was completely haphazard. An exception was made for the LNWR's war memorial locomotives. Photographic grey, also known as works grey, was a paint scheme commonly applied to steam locomotives during the period before colour photography became commonplace. It was applied to allow sharper, more detailed images of the locomotive to be recorded. The first photographs of railways and their locomotives were made by private individuals, but by the 1860s the railway companies themselves were keen to create official photographs of the highest quality possible of their latest designs, which led to the adoption of photographic grey in railway photography. Use Railway companies wished to record their latest locomotives for use in publicity material and advertisements, and as a technical record of their work. This was especially the case in the United Kingdom, where all but the smallest of the 'pre-grouping' companies owned their own locomotive works and designed and built their own railway engines. Cumberland ( ) is a historic county in the far North West England. It covers part of the Lake District as well as the north Pennines and Solway Firth coast. Edmund Beckett Faber, 1st Baron Faber (9 February 1847 – 17 September 1920) was a British Conservative politician. Sir Frederick Harrison
Lieutenant Colonel Sir Frederick Harrison (184431 December 1914) was railway manager and an officer in the British Army's Engineer and Railway Volunteer Staff Corps. Harrison was born in Croydon, Surrey, the son of George Harrison of Newport, Monmouthshire. At the age of twenty, Harrison became a clerk on the London and North Western Railway (LNWR) at Shrewsbury. He rose through the ranks, working at Euston under George Findlay, the General Goods Manager; a later post was that of Assistant District Superintendent at Liverpool, and in 1874 he moved to the equivalent job at Chester. Sir Robert Turnbull (21 February 1852 22 February 1925) was a British railway manager. He joined the London and North Western Railway (LNWR) in 1868 and became its General Manager in 1914.
