Frans Hens (1 August 1856, Antwerp – 11 May 1928, Antwerp) was a Belgian post-impressionist painter, draftsman and printmaker. He was one of the first European artists to paint in Sub-Saharan Africa. Everard Larock, known as Evert (21 May 1865 – 13 January 1901) was a Belgian Impressionist painter who belonged to the Secessionist art groups ''Als ik Kan'' and ''De XIII''. Life and work Larock was born in Kapelle-op-den-Bos. After much pleading, his father (a veterinarian) finally agreed to let him attend evening classes in drawing at the municipal academy in Mechelen. His success there led to evening classes at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts (Antwerp) while he worked in the studios of a decorative artist named Henri Verbuecken during the day. During his military duty in 1884, he was diagnosed with tuberculosis and was exempted from any further service. Edgard Pierre Jozef Farasyn (also spelled Farasijn; 14 August 1858, in Antwerp – 22 March 1938, in Antwerp) was a Belgian painter, watercolorist, engraver and etcher who specialized in seascapes, landscapes, genre scenes and interior portraits. In his later life, he became interested in depicting fishermen. Life and work He received his artistic training at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts (Antwerp), where he studied under Nicaise de Keyser. In 1885, he became a teacher at the Academy. Emile Claus (27 September 1849 – 14 June 1924) was a Belgian painter. Life Emile Claus was born on 27 September 1849, in Sint-Eloois-Vijve, a village in West Flanders (Belgium), at the banks of the river Lys. Emile was the twelfth child in a family of thirteen. Father Alexander was a grocer-publican and for some time town councillor. Mother Celestine Verbauwhede came from a Brabant skipper’s family and had her hands full with her offspring. As a child, Emile already loved drawing and on Sunday went three kilometres on foot to the Academy of Waregem (the neighbouring town) to learn how to draw. He graduated from the Academy with a gold medal. Although father Claus allowed him to take drawing classes, he did not fancy an artist's career for his son.
