Lyudmila Buldakova
Lyudmila Stepanovna Buldakova (May 25, 1938 – November 7, 2006) was a Soviet and Russian volleyball player. Buldakova had a long career in the Soviet national team, from 1955 through 1972, serving as the team captain in the last few years. At that time, the Soviet Union and Japan were the dominant nations in women's volleyball, and Buldakova and her team captured many titles. At the World Championships, she won the title in 1956, 1960 and 1970, while placing second in 1962 (the USSR boycotted the 1967 editio The Soviet Union placed second behind Japan in the sport's Olympic debut in 1964, but then went on to win the gold in 1968 and 1972. Buldakova also became European Champion in 1958, 1967 and 1971, placing second in 1955, while missing the 1963 edition (which was won by the Soviet Union). The 1962 FIVB Women's World Championship was the fourth edition of the tournament, organised by the world's governing body, the FIVB. It was held from 13 to 25 October 1962 in the Soviet Union. As a tournament held once every four years and following its last edition in 1960, the subsequent tournament should have been in 1964. When volleyball became an Olympic sport starting in the 1964 Games, the FIVB decided to move the World Championships from the Olympic years to be played in between Olympic Games, therefore anticipating the 1964 edition to 1962. Unified Sports Classification System of the USSR (russian: Единая Всесоюзная спортивная классификация) is a document which provided general Soviet physical education system requirements for both athletes and coaches. Similar systems still exist today in several former Soviet republics. The International Volleyball Hall of Fame (IVHF) was founded to honor extraordinary players, coaches, officials, and leaders who have made significant contributions to the game of volleyball. The Hall of Fame is located in Holyoke, Massachusetts, where volleyball was invented in 1895 by William G. Morgan at the local YMCA. The Russian Women's Volleyball Super League, is the highest professional women's volleyball league in Russia. It is organized and administrated by the Russian Volleyball Federation. History The dissolution of the Soviet Union in late 1991 brought an end to all sports leagues played in the Soviet Union, including the Soviet Women's Volleyball Championship. The national league was created by the Russian Volleyball Federation as a continuation of the Soviet Championships. The 1991–92 inaugural season had the participation of clubs based in the Russian Commonwealth and Yugoslavia. From the second season onwards only clubs based in Russia were allowed to compete.
