Lytham St Annes Art Collection
The Lytham St Annes Art Collection is a public art collection of over 240 artworks in Lytham St Annes, Lancashire. Fylde Borough Council are the custodians of the paintings, sculptures, prints and artefacts that are mostly held within the Lytham St Annes Town Hall. The collection was started in 1925 by the donation of ''Herd Lassie'', painted by Richard Ansdell, to the townspeople of Lytham St Annes, Lancashire. It was donated by John Booth (1857–1941), son of the founder of the grocery store chain Booths. The collection of 25 works is now one of the largest public collections of Ansdell's paintings. One of the most notable paintings in the collection is ''The Vision of Catherine of Aragon'' (also called ''Queen Katherine's Dream'') by Henry Fuseli, which is estimated to be worth about £1.5-2 million, according to a 2013 valuation by Christie's, making it by far the most valuable item in the collection. The Vision Of Catherine Of Aragon
''The Vision of Catherine of Aragon'', or ''Queen Catherine's Vision'', is a painting in oils on canvas by the Swiss artist Henry Fuseli, created in 1781. The work is held at the Lytham St Annes Art Collection, in Lytham St Annes, Lancashire, England. Description This canvas represents a passage from the play ''Henry VIII'', Act IV, scene 2, by William Shakespeare, where Queen Catherine of Aragon has a macabre dream of her own end after being banished in favour of Anne Boleyn. The Queen is lying on her deathbed, and she raises her left arm towards the crown offered to her by several partially naked female ghostly apparitions, in an emotion that surprises her servant sitting at her bedside, at the foot of a lyre and a sculpture. Both women are dressed in ancient classical attire, not in the 16th-century fashion. Lytham St Annes Town Hall is a municipal building on the South Promenade in Lytham St Annes, Lancashire, England. The structure, which is used as the headquarters of Fylde Borough Council, is a locally listed building. History The building was originally commissioned by William John Porritt through his development business, the St Anne's on the Sea Land and Building Company, for use as the "Southdown Hydro Hotel": it has been described by the Lytham St Annes Civic Society as "one of the best examples of a Porritt development". It was designed in the Victorian style, built in stone quarried in East Lancashire and was completed in 1898. Richard Ansdell
Richard Ansdell (11 May 1815 – 20 April 1885) was a British painter of animals and genre scenes. Life Ansdell was born in Liverpool (then in Lancashire), the son of Thomas Griffiths Ansdell, a freeman who worked at the port, and Anne Jackson. His father died young; Richard was educated at The Liverpool Blue Coat school for orphans. He had a natural talent for art from an early age, and after leaving school worked for a portrait painter in Chatham in Kent, and also spent time as a sign painter in the Netherlands. He first exhibited at the Liverpool Academy in 1835, becoming a student there the following year. His animal and rural subjects proved to be popular and he soon attracted wealthy patrons. His first exhibition at the Royal Academy, London, was in 1840, with two paintings called "Grouse shooting" and "A Galloway farm". Booths is a chain of high-end supermarkets in Northern England. Most of its branches are in Lancashire, but there are also branches in Cheshire, Cumbria, Greater Manchester, North Yorkshire and West Yorkshire. Henry Fuseli ( ; German: Johann Heinrich Füssli ; 7 February 1741 – 17 April 1825) was a Swiss painter, draughtsman and writer on art who spent much of his life in Britain. Many of his works, such as ''The Nightmare'', deal with supernatural subject matter. He painted works for John Boydell's Shakespeare Gallery, and created his own "Milton Gallery". He held the posts of Professor of Painting and Keeper at the Royal Academy. His style had a considerable influence on many younger British artists, including William Blake.
