Lyndhurst is a heritage-listed villa at 3 London Road, Clayfield, City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It was designed by Robin Dods and built from 1896 onwards by Walls & Juster. It is also known as The Reid House. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 12 December 2003. History Lyndhurst is a timber residence erected in 1896 for John Reid, principal of J C Hutton & Co., ham and bacon processors. It was the first substantial house designed by R S (Robin) Dods after his commencement in the Brisbane partnership of Hall and Dods from August 1896. Dods was a prolific, innovative and highly skilled architect whose work moved the Queensland timber house tradition forward. His work was influential and during his lifetime, the "Lyndhurst" design was published more often than any other of his domestic works. Lyndhurst is a large village and civil parish situated in the New Forest National Park in Hampshire, England. John Singleton Copley, 1st Baron Lyndhurst, (21 May 1772 – 12 October 1863) was a British lawyer and politician. He was three times Lord Chancellor, Lord High Chancellor of Great Britain. Background and education Lyndhurst was born in Boston, Massachusetts, the son of painter John Singleton Copley and his wife Susanna Farnham (née Clarke), granddaughter of silversmith Edward Winslow (silversmith), Edward Winslow. His father left America to live in London in 1774, and his wife and son followed a year later. Copley was educated at a private school and Trinity College, Cambridge, where he graduated as second Wrangler (University of Cambridge), wrangler. Political and legal career Called to the bar at Lincoln's Inn in 1804, he gained a considerable practice. He was appointed a serjeant-at-law on 6 July 1813. Francis Lyndhurst
Francis Lyndhurst was an English theatrical scenery painter, film producer and film director, who set up an early film studio at Shoreham-by-Sea, West Sussex. Lyndhurst's first films, beginning with ''The Showman’s Dream'' in 1914, were made at Shoreham Fort by his production company (called ''Sealite'' or ''Sunny South Film Company'' - sources vary). The next year, he set up the ''Glasshouse Studio'' in a nearby, glass-sided, building. The business failed and Lyndhurst returned to his former occupation of scenery painting. During World War II the barn in which Lyndhurst stored his films was destroyed by bombing. No copies of any of his films are known to survive. Lyndhurst had four sons; in order that they should avoid fighting in the Second World War, he bought a farm. Later, a portion of land was used to build chalets and set up a holiday camp. Lyndhurst is a small city in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, United States, and an eastern suburb of Cleveland. The population was 14,050 at the 2020 census. A small part of Lyndhurst was originally part of Mayfield Township. History The land currently comprising Lyndhurst was part of the Connecticut Western Reserve, obtained via treaty with the Iroquois tribe in 1796 by the Connecticut Land Company. In 1797, Moses Cleaveland named the area east of the Cuyahoga River "Euclid," after the Greek Mathematician and Patron Saint of surveyors. Euclid Township was officially formed in 1809. Despite this, Lyndhurst's population consisted mostly of Native American Indians until after the War of 1812. Lyndhurst, also known as the Jay Gould estate, is a Gothic Revival country house that sits in its own park beside the Hudson River in Tarrytown, New York, about a half mile south of the Tappan Zee Bridge on US 9. The house was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1966. and History The home was designed in 1838 by Alexander Jackson Davis, and owned in succession by New York City mayor William Paulding Jr., merchant George Merritt, and railroad tycoon Jay Gould. Paulding named his house "Knoll", although critics quickly dubbed it "Paulding's Folly" because of its unusual design that includes fanciful turrets and asymmetrical outline. Its limestone exterior was quarried at Sing Sing in present-day Ossining, New York.
